Musical Theatre Minor


The Musical Theatre minor capitalizes on the strengths of three separate Truman State University departments in the areas of music, theatre, and dance to create a transformative experience in the area of musical theatre. Whether your primary major is in theatre, vocal performance, exercise science, or another area, you can pursue a Musical Theatre minor to extend your degree and take classes that align with your interests.

Audition Requirements

Auditions for the Musical Theatre program take place in the fall. You must meet the following minimum requirements to audition for the Musical Theatre minor:

Completion of the following courses with a grade of “C” or better:

  • THEA 277 – Acting I: Elements of Acting – Credits: 3
  • 1 credit from the following:
    • MUSI 142 – Class Lessons in Voice – Credits: 1
    • MUSI 155 – Voice, Lower Division – Credits: 1 (can be repeated)
    • MUSI 156 – Voice, Lower Division – Credits: 2
    • MUSI 157 – Voice, Lower Division – Credits: 3

Once you have been accepted into the program, you will proceed with the coursework shown below.

Program Requirements (18-22 Credits):

The Musical Theatre Minor requires the successful completion of 18 credits of the following courses:

Foundational Coursework (15-19 credits):

  • MUSI 1XX – Music Fundamentals – Credits: 3
    or MUSI 130 – Music Analysis I – Credits: 3*
  • THEA 277 – Acting I: Elements of Acting – Credits: 3
  • THEA 3XX – Acting for Musical Theatre – Credits: 3
  • 2 credits or more from the following:
    • MUSI 142 – Class Lessons in Voice – Credits: 1 (can be repeated)
    • MUSI 155 – Voice, Lower Division – Credits: 1 (can be repeated)
    • MUSI 156 – Voice, Lower Division – Credits: 2
    • MUSI 157 – Voice, Lower Division – Credits: 3
  • 2 credits or more from the following:
    • ES 156 – Beginning Tap Dancing – Credits: 1
    • ES 256 – Intermediate Tap Dancing – Credits: 1
    • ES 157 – Beginning Jazz Dance – Credits: 1
    • ES 214 – Elementary Ballet – Credits: 1
    • ES 215 – Intermediate Ballet – Credits: 1
    • THEA 3XX – Voice and Movement – Credits: 3
  • 2 credits or more from the following:
    • MUSI 344 – Opera Workshop – Credits: 1 (can be repeated)
    • THEA 3XX – Theatre Practice: Musical Performance – Credits: 1-4 (can be repeated)

Notes:

At least nine hours of the program requirements must be completed at Truman State University.
*MUSI 130 requires concurrent enrollment in MUSI 132, Aural Skills I (required for all music majors and the Music minor).
**Cannot be used for Musical Theatre minor if also being used for Theatre minor.
