Spring Commencement Ceremony

Students must apply to graduate no later than April 1, 2021, in order to participate in the May 2021 ceremonies. All candidates will be assigned to participate in a specific ceremony based on their first degree program as of March 22, 2021. Candidates may not make adjustments to the ceremony they are assigned to; the Registrar’s Office reserves the right to assign or adjust ceremony participation in order to maintain ceremony capacities for social distancing. Candidates will be emailed instructions for their ceremony, arrival time, clearance process, graduation fair, etc. Candidates not planning to participate in commencement must notify the Registrar’s Office by emailing annare@truman.edu by Monday, April 12th.

The Friday, May 7th ceremonies will be held at 11am, 2:30pm, and 6pm. The Saturday, May 8th ceremonies will be held at 9:30am, 1pm, 4pm and 7:30pm. The north entrance doors will open one hour before each ceremony for candidates to enter Pershing Building. Candidates must present their ceremony-specific entry ticket, wear a mask, and be dressed in academic regalia to enter and participate in their assigned commencement ceremony. Degree candidates must bring their completed green reader card with their name and degree program printed on it, diploma cover, and any appropriate honor medallions with them for the ceremony. No additional diploma covers or medallions will be provided.

The ceremonies will be held in a socially distant format. Candidates will be expected to maintain 6 ft. of social distance and to properly wear masks throughout the day. Upon entry to Pershing Building, candidates may proceed directly to the arena floor to be seated or stop in the small gym to have a posed picture taken prior to the ceremony. All candidates must be in their seats no later than 15 minutes prior to the ceremony’s start.

The main west and east entrances will open 30 minutes before each ceremony for guests to enter. Guests must present their ceremony-specific entry ticket, wear a mask, and maintain social distance from other pairs of guests. Guests will proceed to the arena where each party of two will be seated 6 ft. from other parties of two guests in the bleachers. No guests will be allowed to stand during the ceremonies. Masks must be properly worn once guests enter Pershing Building and throughout the ceremony until guests exit the building.

  • Name Pronunciation System – Truman uses NameCoach to provide degree candidates an opportunity to record the pronunciation of their name prior to their commencement ceremony to help ensure correct pronunciation during the ceremony. By recording your name, the commencement reader(s) have the ability to hear how you pronounce your name in addition to reading the phonetic spelling on your reader card. Recording your name is optional, but is recommended for any names that could be difficult to pronounce or could be pronounced multiple ways. Degree candidates will receive an email from no-reply@name-coach.com that will have a record link to click on to access the system with your Truman email address.
