RECAP: Indianapolis Snaps Truman's Six-Game Streak & Ends Title Hopes

Box Score

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – Like a champion prize fighter, the University of Indianapolis took Truman's best shot early then delivered several body blows in route to a 31-7 victory and the outright Great Lakes Valley Conference championship.

Both teams came into the title bout with two of the top four kick return squads in Division II. UINDY blinked first on the opening salvo and kicked the ball out of bounds. Truman mixed four passes with six runs and Jaden Barr found a wide open Jake Ellis in the back of the enzone from a snap at the one yard line and a 7-0 Bulldog lead. Truman used 10 plays and went 65 yards in 5:19.

The defense came out and did their part. The Greyhounds started at their own 25 and went three and out, only gaining four yards on the drive. On the punt, Collin Timmons hit Spencer Newell knocking the ball free that was recovered by Gavin Bane at the Truman 17.

Truman held UINDY to just a field goal as Paul Buisman connected from 27 yards out to cut Truman's lead to 7-3.

Lawrence Woods got into the act on the ensuing kickoff. Woods broke free and raced 53 yards into Greyhound territory at the 45. The offense picked off where they left off with Jaden Barr hitting Andy Satulla for 11 and then calling his own number for 13. The Bulldogs got to the 10 but a personal foul penalty against the offensive line pushed the ball back out to the 24. A pair of incomplete passes and a missed field goal seemed to turn the tide.

UINDY took over and promptly marched 76 yards in 11 plays to take a lead they would not relinquish. Jake Purichia extended the ball over the line from a yard out and the 10-7 lead.

On their next two possessions, Torino Clinton scored from 18 yards and out Daveon Bell ran for 71 yards on a tunnel screen and UINDY increased their lead to 24-7.

The Bulldogs got to the two just before half but Barr's pass was picked off by Connor Steeb in the endzone. It was his first interception thrown in four games.

Truman would enter the redzone four times and come away with just the seven points at the start. Barr threw a pair of interceptions in the endzone and Truman missed two field goals of 41 and 46 yards.

Purichia picked apart the defense going 17-of-22 for the day with 289 yards passing. Malik Higgins nabbed six balls for 119 with the biggest haul being a 48-yard reception on third and 12 in the third quarter that set up the final score of the afternoon.

The two teams came into the contest averaging nearly a combine 500 yards rushing per game, the Greyhounds had 102 and Truman 93 with the game played in a brisk two hours and 23 minutes.

Barr was 19-of-30 for 123 yards and was Truman's leading rusher with 53.

With the championship in the hands of Indianapolis, Truman will look to finish second in the GLVC with a road date at one-loss Missouri S&T next weekend in Rolla.
