Season Stats

INDIANAPOLIS - - Twenty-one lead changes. Seventeen ties. An absolute epic Great Lakes Valley Conference contest.

But unfortunately, the effort came up just short.

Redshirt junior guard Cory Myers led all Bulldogs with 16 points, and redshirt junior guard Dwight Sistrunk, Jr., finished with 15 points, six rebounds, and six assists – all without a single turnover – but the Truman men's basketball team dropped an 87-86 decision at the University of Indianapolis on Saturday afternoon.

The Bulldogs (17-6, 9-4 GLVC) trailed by eight at the break, but bounded out in the second half by scoring the first 10 points to put the Greyhounds (17-4, 11-2 GLVC) on edge and behind 50-48. The teams traded 8-0 and 7-0 runs to a 60-58 Bulldog lead before the see-sawing began down for the final 11-plus minutes of game time. The largest lead either team had was three the rest of the way, with the teams even at 85-all after a Joe Retic lay-up for the 'Hounds with 50 seconds to play.

Sistrunk, Jr., was fouled and converted on one of two free throws with 35 seconds left, before UIndy's Lucas Barker made a lay-up with 11 seconds left on the clock. After a timeout, the Bulldogs raced down court, with Sistrunk, Jr., finding redshirt senior guard Andrew Vander Zwaag with four seconds to play, but a final shot from Vander Zwaag bounced off the glass and rim, allowing the Greyhounds, who were receiving votes in the NABC top-25 coaches' poll, to escape with the one-point victory.

"I'm just proud to coach these guys," head coach Chris Foster said during his post-game interview with 104.7 FM KRES. "They fight so hard and have an incredible will to win. The way they battled and competed in the second half on the tail end of a four-game road swing was remarkable."

The Bulldogs shot 45.2% (28-of-62) from the floor for the game but connected on 12-of-19 (63.2%) of their three-point tries to hang around, despite being out-rebounded 43-26. Truman hit 18-of-24 free throws and dished out 15 assists to just seven turnovers, as the purple and white remain one of the nation's best teams both in turnover margin (+5 today) and assist-to-turnover ratio.

Senior guard Cole Myers, junior forward Billy Daniel, and junior guard Kyle Kanaskie each scored 11 points, while Vander Zwaag and freshman guard Jake Velky poured in nine points apiece. Jordan Loyd led UIndy with 26 points, as the Greyhounds improved to 3-0 all-time against Truman – with two of the victories coming at the buzzer in trips to Indianapolis.

The Bulldogs lost for the first time under head coach Chris Foster when they reached the 80-point mark, moving to 30-1 in now the second season under Foster.

Truman remains atop the GLVC West division despite the loss, although depending on results later today, the team could either be tied once again with Quincy and/or Drury at 9-4. The Bulldogs return to Pershing Arena after a four-game road trip this Thursday (Feb. 11) night to play host to Wisconsin-Parkside. The No. 23-ranked Rangers are 18-3 overall (11-2 GLVC).
