Strong Fourth Quarter Leads Truman Women To Conference Win

Box Score (HTML)

KIRKSVILLE – The Truman Women's Basketball team scored 13 of the first 15 points to start the fourth quarter and pulled away for a 60-49 victory over McKendree (Ill.) to move into an early tie for the Great Lakes Valley Conference West Division on Thursday night.

Michalina Tomczak notched her second double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds as she scored eight of her 10 in the second half to break things open.

The game featured two of the top three scoring defenses in the GLVC and scoring was at a premium through the first three quarters. Both teams failed to reach 10 points in the second quarter as Truman took a 23-19 lead into the locker room.

McKendree fought back from an eight-point third quarter deficit to tie the game at 34 apiece with 1:15 left in the quarter before Courtney Strait knocked down her only three-pointer of the night to close the quarter and spark the 'Dogs to victory.

Kasey Gassensmith made a circus shot while being fouled for a three-point play to start the fourth and Tomczak scored four straight to expand the lead back out to eight. Ashley Hartwig moved the lead to 10 and Rachel Steinhoff and Strait hit free throws for a 14-point lead with over six minutes left to play.

Gassensmith gave the 'Dogs their largest lead with her three-pointer to make it 55-39 with four minutes showing.

Hartwig had game high honors with 13 points while adding seven rebounds off the bench. Truman shot 38% from the field and made 19-of-28 free throws.

Kelsee Ennis led the Bearcats with 12 points but McKendree struggled from the field by shooting 27% overall and only 40% from the foul line.

With a Drury loss at Lewis and Quincy's victory against Illinois Springfield, Truman joins the Panthers and Hawks at 3-1 in the league and a share of the West Division. The Bulldogs will host UIS on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
