Late Rally for Volleyball Halted at USI

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – A late Truman rally fell just short in the second match of the weekend road trip, as the Bulldog volleyball team lost in five sets at Southern Indiana on Saturday afternoon, moving to 7-5 overall (2-2 GLVC) on the season.

Quick Recap:
  • Match Score: Southern Indiana 3, Truman 2
  • Set Scores: USI 25-20, TSU 25-21, USI 25-16, TSU 29-27, USI 15-13
  • Records: Truman (7-5, 2-2 GLVC West) || Southern Indiana (10-2, 3-1 GLVC)

Match Breakdown:
  • Truman and USI were tight from the get-go, as the teams traded the lead back-and-forth throughout the opening set. The Bulldogs eventually took a 20-18 lead on a Kayla Bastian kill; however, the Eagles closed the frame on a 7-0 run – getting three kills and a block from Abbey Winter in the last four points – to shake Truman off, 25-20.
  • The second set saw Truman turn an 11-10 deficit into a 17-13 lead, as Bastian added a pair of kills alongside one by Bailey O'Drobinak during the 7-2 run. USI rebounded with six in a row, but this time, Truman was led out of a timeout by Ali Patterson, as the senior put away two kills and then linked up with Bastian and Abby Heise for a pair of blocks to right the ship at 21-19. USI never closed within two, as Truman evened the match at intermission with a 25-21 decision.
  • Truman never led in set three, as USI came out of the break with an 8-2 start to the set and cruised to a 25-16 decision.
  • The fourth set mimicked the first, as the teams sided-out early, before Truman built a 10-6 lead behind a 5-0 run that was keyed by Bailey Mason (two kills), Heise, and Patterson. Truman's lead would reach seven, before USI crept closer and forced a Bulldog timeout at 23-20. Bastian would get the 'Dogs to set point at 24-20, but USI rallied for five in a row to earn a match point of its own at 25-24. Truman fought off match point and extended the match, thanks to back-to-back kills by Heise and Bastian for a 29-27 decision.
  • USI jumped out to a huge lead in the fifth set, building an 11-4 margin and appearing to have the match in hand, before Truman roared back with an 8-2 run to cut USI's lead to 13-12. The squads sided-out to 14-13 USI, before the Eagles closed the match with a kill and the 15-13 win.
  • Five Bulldogs scored double-figure points in the match, led by 22.5 from Bastian (19 kills, 18 digs, three aces, one block assist), while Patterson (13 kills, four blocks), Mason (12 kills, six digs, one ace), O'Drobinak (10 kills, six digs, six blocks), and Heise (10 kills, 18 digs, four blocks) also reached double-digit points.
  • Setter Kayleen Green finished with career-highs in both assists (52) and digs (16) for a double-double, while libero Claire Wandrey tacked on a career-best 25 digs to lead the Bulldog back line.

Extra Notes:
  • The Bulldogs are now 8-2 all-time against USI, including a 3-2 mark since joining the GLVC in 2013.
  • In addition to the career-highs for Green and Wandrey, Bastian, Mason, and O'Drobinak also notched new career-bests in other multiple categories.
  • The Bulldogs have now out-blocked their opposition in 10 of the 12 matches this season, winning that category 11-8 today.
  • Bastian's 78 hitting attempts marked the both by any Bulldog in the 25-point rally-scoring era, which started with the 2008 season. She broke Allie Brak's previous high of 75, set at Maryville in November of 2013.

Up Next:
  • The Bulldogs continue their current 4-match road trip next Friday night when they face the GLVC West division leader Rockhurst at 7 p.m. in Kansas City. The Hawks, ranked 13th in the nation in last week's AVCA top-25 coaches' poll, have won 12 straight, including a pair of road sweeps at Illinois Springfield and McKendree this weekend.
