Volleyball Sweeps Day One Action at Cal-PA

CALIFORNIA, Pa. - - The first daily sweep of the 2015 season came to the Truman volleyball team on Friday, as the Bulldogs dispatched both Fairmont State and California-PA to run its record to 4-2.
 
In the day's opening match, Truman took on a Fairmont (W. Va.) State squad that came into Friday's action at a perfect 3-0 overall on the young season. The two squads traded the opening two sets, before Truman closed out the match with a pair of 25-23 decisions in sets three and four to pick up the 3-1 victory. Ali Patterson hit .440 with 15 kills and five blocks, while three other Bulldogs – Kayla Bastian (14 kills, 16 digs), Abby Heise (10 kills, 16 digs), and Matti Mason (39 assists, 14 digs) – completed double-doubles of their own. The 16 digs for Heise marked a new career-high, as the senior hit .307 and neared a triple-double with seven assists. Bailey O'Drobinak added six kills on a .375 hitting line.
 
Then, in the finale, the Bulldogs had to go the distance to close out host Cal-PA by a 3-2 score. Truman fell behind after a 25-17 loss in the opening set but rebounded to crush the Vulcans by scores of 25-14 and 25-11 in the second and third sets. However, Cal-PA punched back with a 25-19 win in the fourth before the Bulldogs earned victory No. 4 on the season with a 15-11 decision in the fifth frame. Bastian (15 kills, 23 digs) led four Bulldogs in double-figures offensively, as Emilee Walters added 12 kills and six blocks, and both Heise and Patterson put away 10 kills each. Heise again went for a double-double with 14 digs, while Patterson also dug 10 attempts for a double-double of her own. The duo combined for 11 blocks as well. Claire Wandrey finished with 22 digs along the back line, while Kassi Schroeder added 10 digs of her own.
 
The Bulldogs return to action with two more matches on Saturday at the Cal-PA event, facing Clarion (Pa.) at 9 a.m. (CT) and Saginaw Valley (Mich.) State at 12 p.m. (CT).
