KIRKSVILLE - - The Truman men's basketball team shot 48% from the floor and got a team-high 24 points from senior Reed Mells, but Missouri-St. Louis' Aareon Smith delivered a 38-point performance to guide the visiting Tritons past the Bulldogs on Senior Day in Pershing Arena.

The Bulldogs – who now sit tied for second place in the GLVC West with UMSL at 10-7 in league play – put three players in double-figures; however, Truman lost the lead for the final time with 4:12 to play and could never regain it in the team's effort to reach its first GLVC division title.

The game was tight throughout, with UMSL's 10-point lead – the largest by either team in the game – at the 11:15 mark quickly being wiped away by a 12-0 Bulldog run that put Truman on top, 62-60. Truman would lead by four at 66-62, before a 6-0 run by the guests turned the scoreboard to a 68-66 advantage with 3:17 to play.

Truman would tie it once more at 68-all, but clutch free throw shooting down the stretch sealed it for the Tritons, who earned the 76-71 win.

Smith – who had nine points at the break – turned in a 20 minutes for his lifetime, hitting all 10 second-half shots and adding 29 more to his career-high line of 38 points. The Bulldogs countered with 24 points from Mells (10-for-10 on two-pointers), along with 18 points by Seth Jackson and 11 from Isaac Gardner. Both Jackson and Connor Erickson finished with six rebounds, while five different Bulldogs tallied two assists. Cole Myers led all players with three steals off the bench.

Mells, meanwhile, surpassed the 1,000-point mark for his career in the contest - as the senior spent his first two seasons at Missouri Western before transferring to Truman prior to his junior year. He has scored 1,013 career points, including 684 in 53 games as a Bulldog.

Truman shot 27-of-56 from the floor but just 9-of-32 from three-point range (28.1%) and 8-of-13 (61.5%) from the free throw line. UMSL countered at 56.0% from the floor, 6-of-14 from three-point distance, and 14-of-23 (60.9%) at the foul line.

The Bulldogs – who now sit eighth in the GLVC full 16-team standings – will visit Quincy (13-14, 7-10 GLVC) on Thursday (Feb. 26) night to close the regular season.
