Slow Start Hampers 'Dogs in GLVC Opener

Story Links

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - - Visiting Rockhurst jumped out to a quick 9-1 start and never let the Truman men's basketball team draw even on Thursday night, as the Bulldogs dropped their 2015-16 Great Lakes Valley Conference opener by a 78-72 score.

The Bulldogs (4-3, 0-1 GLVC) struggled to get in sync all night, shoot just 34% in the first half and finishing at 37%, while RU (4-2, 1-0 GLVC) shot 51% overall, including 22-of-36 (61%) from inside the three-point arc.

Truman trailed by as many as 11 in the first half before a late burst cut the Rockhurst lead to just four at 37-33 with 30 seconds left in the half. However, the Hawks' Malachi Nix converted a buzzer-beating lay-up to push the lead back to six at the break.

The Bulldogs fought back again at the start of the second half, scoring seven of the first nine points to trail just 41-40, but when a jumper by Connor Erickson spun out, RU rattled off six in a row to push the lead back to three possessions at the 15:27 mark. The lead would hover between five and 14 for the rest of the game for Rockhurst, as Truman shot just 4-of-18 (22.2%) from three-point range in the second half and couldn't close the gap any further.

Erickson led all Bulldogs with 18 points on 8-of-16 shooting (1-2 FT) and added four rebounds in 24 minutes, while Cory Myers finished with 14 points and team-highs in rebounds (7) and assists (5). Jake Velky scored all 11 of his points in the first half, and Cole Myers chipped in nine points and swiped a game-high three RU turnovers.

The Bulldogs were out-rebounded 43-30 overall but did out-board the Hawks on the offensive end by a 13-10 count. Each team finished with 15 second-chance points, with Truman turning the 17 RU turnovers into 19 points. Truman turned it over just six times but shot just 21-of-33 (64%) at the foul line (14-of-23 in the first half).

Nix and Austin LeVan each scored 18 points for RU, while both John Burke (13 points, 10 rebounds) and Adam Fatkin (16 points, 12 rebounds) logged double-doubles.

The Bulldogs will look to recover on Saturday afternoon when they visit William Jewell (2-3, 0-1 GLVC) in Liberty, Mo., at 4 p.m. The Cardinals fell 89-60 at Quincy on Thursday night in their GLVC opener.
