Truman's Defense Turns In Another Gem

Box Score (HTML)

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – The defense turned it up another notch in the second quarter as the Truman Women's Basketball team outscored Culver-Stockton 14-4 and then posted their third straight win 61-42 on Saturday afternoon in Pershing Arena.

Michalina Tomczak again led all scorers with 17 points and adding four rebounds and two blocks. Cassidy Clark added 12 with eight coming in the first half. It was the sixth straight game that Truman held an opponent to under 60 points and through seven games this year has allowed 52.2 points per game.

Culver-Stockton's Randi Lee Plunkett banked in a three-pointer to give the visitors a 13-10 lead near the end of the first quarter before Courtney Strait dropped in a pair of free throws with less than a second remaining after nabbing one of the Bulldogs eight steals on the game.

Kasey Gassensmith tied the game at 15 apiece following Truman's only three-pointer of the game early in the second and an 8-0 run to close out the half giving Truman their largest lead at 26-17.

The Wildcats drought from the floor continued into the third as Truman's lead swelled to as many as 22 points. A jumper by T.J. Hart three minutes in broke a 0-of-10 slump by CSC with five turnovers.

Tomczak scored 11 of her 17 points in the final 20 minutes as she was 7-of-10 from the floor. For the week, she averaged 17.3 points in three games with seven rebounds per game and 10 blocked shots. She shot nearly 70% from the field (23-of-33) and was 6-of-9 from the free throw line.

Rachel Steinhoff had seven of the team's 15 assists and added seven defensive rebounds. Truman won the glass 39-31 while shooting 40% from the field.

The Bulldogs will open conference play with a Great Lakes Valley Conference match-up with Rockhurst (Mo.) University next Thursday night at home starting at 5:30 p.m.
