Bulldogs Trounce Peacocks Behind Balanced Effort

FAYETTE, Iowa - - Senior Michalina Tomczak finished with 19 points, 11 rebounds, and six blocks, and the Truman women's basketball team held its fifth opponent to less than 60 points in a 74-48 rout of Upper Iowa on Wednesday night.
 
The Bulldogs (4-2) took the lead 17 seconds into the game and never trailed against the Peacocks (1-5), as Truman scored 42 points in the paint and led by as many as 29 points against Upper Iowa. Tomczak was a perfect 6-of-6 from the floor for 12 points and seven rebounds in the first half, while Ashley Hartwig scored eight first half points in just seven minutes off the bench.
 
Truman's lead ballooned on the road in the second half with contributions coming from 10 different players in the scoring column. Tomczak added seven more points and four blocks in 11 second-half minutes, and Kasey Gassensmith – building off a buzzer-beating lay-up to close the first half – put in five points in her seven minutes of second-half play.
 
The Bulldogs out-scored UIU in each of the four quarters and by a 42-12 margin in the paint. For the game, Truman shot 48.3% (28-for-58) from the floor, including a 3-of-10 (30%) mark from three-point range. The Bulldogs hit 15-of-18 (83.3%) of their free throw tries as well and crushed the Peacocks on the boards, 46-24 (11-4 offensive).
 
Tomczak's double-double led the 'Dogs in the stat columns, and both Hartwig (10) and Courtney Strait (10) also reached double-figures in points. Gassensmith added nine points, and starting point guard Rachel Steinhoff finished with six points, five rebounds, four assists, and three steals.
 
The Bulldogs will close the Thanksgiving break schedule on Saturday (Nov. 28) with a non-conference game against Culver-Stockton (Mo.) in Pershing Arena at 1 p.m.
