Women's Soccer Earns 2-0 Shutout at Missouri S&T

EDITOR'S UPDATE: Following the contest, a revised box score credited Allison Lockett with the assist on Truman's first goal, in place of Whitehead. The original story still remains below.

ROLLA, Mo. - - Megan Whitehead scored a goal and added an assist, as the Truman women's soccer team ran its winning streak to six with a 2-0 blanking of Missouri S&T on the road Friday night.

Quick Recap:

Match Breakdown:
  • Truman struck first in the match when senior Alexis Heffernan took a long pass from junior Megan Whitehead past the Missouri S&T for a breakaway. Heffernan then scored on the stadium turf, putting the Bulldogs on top 1-0 in the 14th minute.
  • Heffernan's shot on goal would be the only one for either team in the opening stanza, as Truman out-shot the host Miners 4-0 overall and 1-0 on goal.
  • Then, after a flurry of attempts by the Bulldogs early in the second half, Truman got its insurance goal in the 61st minute when Whitehead took a pass from junior Megan Casserly and headed to the end line. Her attempt hit the hands of the S&T keeper and snuck inside the near post for a 2-0 Truman lead. It was Whitehead's third goal of the season and sixth for her career.
  • Truman out-shot S&T 12-2 for the match, with a 5-1 edge in shots on goal. Heffernan and junior Stephanie Williams took four shots apiece.
  • Sophomore keeper Katie Mattingly earned her fifth shutout of the season with her 90 minutes of clean sheet action. Her back-four proved strong in front, allowing just one shot to reach her hands on the night.

Extra Notes:
  • Heffernan's 24th career goal tied her with Olivia Hayes (2009-12) for ninth-place on Truman's career goal scoring chart. She is now just one behind Trisha Shoemaker (2011-13) for eighth-place.
  • The Truman women have now won six straight for the first time since a 6-0 run from Sept. 22-Oct. 11, 2013.
  • Truman is now 23-6-2 all-time against Missouri S&T, having won 13 in a row dating back to 1998.
  • The Bulldogs continue to sit all alone in second place in the GLVC after Friday night's results, holding firm at 7-0-2 and just one game back of Bellarmine who is atop the ledger at 8-0-1. Missouri-St. Louis is one game behind Truman at 6-1-2, with the Tritons' lone loss coming at Truman's hands earlier this fall in St. Louis.

Up Next:
The Bulldogs will conclude the weekend road trip through southern Missouri with a visit to Drury (6-2-3, 5-2-2 GLVC), who got two goals in the final 10 minutes to defeat Quincy, 2-1, on Friday night in Springfield.
