Hawks Score Late Goal to Stun Bulldog Men

KIRKSVILLE - - The Truman men's soccer team struck in the first half to take a lead, but Quincy rebounded with two in the second half to hand the Bulldogs a 2-1 loss in the regular season finale on Wednesday afternoon at Bulldog Soccer Park.

With the loss, Truman (8-10, 7-8 GLVC) sees its 2015 campaign come to an end, as the Bulldogs needed to pick up at least a draw against the Hawks (11-5-1, 10-4-1 GLVC) and get help in order to qualify for the season-ending Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament that begins Sunday.

All three goals came against a strong westerly wind, as Truman capitalized in the 18th minute to go up 1-0 on freshman Trevor Kaufmann's team-leading sixth goal of the season. Brothers Tyler Luebbert and Nate Luebbert connected on a pass, which led right to Kaufmann who beat the final QU defender and scored in the corner of the net.

However, the Bulldogs were dealt a hand of bad luck in the 60th minute, as a Quincy cross ricocheted off the leg of a Truman defender and into the net, allowing the Hawks to even the score at 1-1.

Both teams had great scoring chances on back-to-back possessions in the 82nd minute, as QU's Taylor Reis sent one just high before Truman's Craig McLaurine got in alone but couldn't get enough spin on a shot to send it across the end line.

In the 85th minute, Quincy landed the final blow, as Jordan Stephens corralled a Reis pass and went in all alone to put the Hawks on top, 2-1. Truman got one final shot in the final five minutes but could not find the equalizer to fall by a 2-1 score.

The Bulldogs narrowly out-shot QU on the day, 10-9, but held a wide advantage in shots on goal at 7-3.

Truman will graduate four seniors – Corey Nolte, John Lee, Jordan Verbanaz, and Matt McMillin – but will return nine starters and 27 squad-members for the 2016 season, which will get underway next August.
