Volleyball Extends Winning Streak to Four

KIRKSVILLE – The Truman volleyball team had to grind out a four-setter against Maryville on Saturday night, but three players in double-figures offensively and nine total team blocks helped spark the Bulldogs to a 3-1 victory in Pershing Arena.

Quick Recap:
  • Match Score: Truman 3, Maryville 1
  • Set Scores: TSU 25-18, TSU 25-23, MU 25-22, TSU 25-19
  • Records: Truman (11-6, 6-3 GLVC West) || Maryville (6-12, 1-8 GLVC West)

Match Breakdown:
  • Truman jumped all over the Saints in the opening set, hitting .245 with 18 kills to win the opener, 25-18. Six different Bulldogs recorded at least three kills, led by four from senior Ali Patterson, while both freshman Bailey Mason and freshman Claire Wandrey finished with seven digs apiece.
  • Maryville appeared to have the second set ready to even the match, as the Saints led 22-18 following an Ashley Selman kill. However, behind a strong serving run by Wandrey, Truman scored six straight to take a 24-22 lead, before eventually taking the set, 25-23, on Patterson's seventh kill of the night. Sophomore Jasmine Brown had four kills in the set, while Patterson and senior Abby Heise put down two block assists.
  • The third set took a similar path as the second, with the Saints using a mid-set run to pull ahead by three at 16-13. This time, though, after Truman clawed back and evened the set at 22-apiece, the Saints scored the last three points on two kills and a double block to force a fourth set at 25-22. The Bulldogs hit their lowest percentage of the night (.196) in the set, with senior Emilee Walters' five kills on seven swings leading the attack.
  • After a pair of early tie scores in the fourth set, Truman went on an 8-2 run to turn a 6-5 lead into a 14-7 advantage. The Saints would creep to within four at 16-12, but Truman pushed the lead back to eight at 21-13 and held on for the 25-19 decision. Four kills from Brown and junior Kayla Bastian led the offense, while senior Sadie Pafford – who entered as the team's libero at the start of the third set – posted a second straight eight-dig frame.
  • For the night, Truman hit .230 (59 kills, 21 errors, 165 swings), while Maryville countered at .130 (52 kills, 28 errors, 185 swings). Truman's defense was a staple all evening, as the Bulldogs out-dug MU 91-78 and out-blocked the Saints 9-5.
  • Bastian led all players with 12 kills, 18 digs, two aces and two blocks for 15.5 total points, while Patterson reached double-figures with 13.5 points on 12 kills and three block assists. Brown finished with 10 kills and hit .304, while Walters hit .538 with eight kills and one error on 13 attacks.
  • Both Heise and junior Kayleen Green totaled 26 assists, with Heise pairing hers with 10 digs for a double-double. She was one of four Bulldogs with 10-plus digs, joining Pafford (career-high 19), Bastian, and Wandrey (10).
  • The Bulldogs also sided-out at better than 60 percent in all four sets, finishing the night at 64 percent.

Extra Notes:
·         The Bulldogs are now 5-1 against the Saints all-time and are riding a three-match winning streak in the series.
  • The match featured 15 ties and six lead changes.
  • Abby Heise set a new career-best with 26 assists, while Lacey Hill's 17 total attempts and three assists also set new personal collegiate-highs.
·         The Bulldogs have now won four in a row, marking the longest winning streak of the season.
·         This was the only regular season match scheduled between the Bulldogs and Saints this season, as Truman's now "pod" features Quincy, Rockhurst, and William Jewell.
