Bulldogs Head Into Tournament On High Note

KIRSKVILLE, Mo. – Amy Briggs capped off senior night in style with a career-high 27 points as the Truman women sent nationally-ranked #16 Quincy (Ill.) University to their third-straight loss in a 70-59 victory on Thursday night in Pershing Arena.

The Bulldogs will be the seventh seed in the upcoming Deaconess Great Lakes Valley Conference and will host William Jewell (Mo.) on Sunday afternoon in Pershing Arena at 1:00 p.m.

Truman raced out to a nine-point lead after back-to-back three-pointers by Briggs and Courtney Strait. However, the Lady Hawks reeled the 'Dogs back in and took their only lead of the game at the 8:08 mark of on consecutive hoops by Tori Kuhn.

Kasey Gassensmith and Linnea Schmelzer put Truman back on top with baskets off the bench and Truman took a 34-30 lead into the locker room.

After the Bulldogs led again by nine twice in the second half, Quincy went on a 7-0 run to grab the momentum and trail by just two at 60-58 with 3:36 left. That would be the turning point as Szafarowicz banked in an offensive rebound and Strait turned a QU turnover into points. Truman would score eight straight with Briggs burying a triple and ending the game with an acrobatic lay-up for her career-high.

Briggs was 10-of-16 from the field including three from outside in 38 minutes of action. Strait added 14 while Szafarowicz pulled down eight boards. Truman shot 52% for the game and was seven of 13 from outside.

The Lady Hawks were held to a season-low 59 points on just 37% shooting from the field. Cramsey led Quincy in scoring with 15 points while second leading scorer Hannah Weedman was held to just two points. Kuhn and Carly Beebe finished in double-figures with 13 and 11 points, respectively.

Despite the win, Truman fell to seventh seed in the conference tournament. Drury (Mo.) and Lewis (Ill.) secured the top two seeds followed by the Lady Hawks and University of Indianapolis. Missouri-St. Louis, Southern Indiana, Truman and Maryville (Mo.) will be first-round sites on Sunday.

The Bulldogs defeated William Jewell 83-75 back on January 25 in Liberty, Mo. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Tickets are $6.00 for adults, $3.00 for students and seniors and Truman students will be admitted free. No season passes or pass lists will be allowed.
