WBB Notes: Truman Hosts East Division Foes This Weekend

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – The Truman Women's Basketball team will jumpstart the new year by hosting a pair of Great Lakes Valley Conference East Division opponents over the weekend. The Bulldogs will welcome for the first time to Pershing Arena, the University of Wisconsin-Parkside for a 5:30 p.m. tip on Friday night and the second ranked Lewis (Ill.) University Flyers on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.

About The Bulldogs (7-2, 1-0 GLVC):
Truman is on a four-game winning streak but has been idle since a December 20 home victory over Culver-Stockton (Mo.) College 86-74 to conclude non-conference action. Senior guard Allie Norton leads the team in scoring at 16.4 points per game and is sixth in the GLVC in scoring, second in three-pointers made per game at 3.2 and eighth in three-point shooting percentage at 46%.
 
Norton is joined in scoring by junior guard Courtney Strait at 13.3 points per night. Strait is 12th in the league in scoring and is second in the GLVC in free throw shooting percentage at 92.1%. Junior center Michalina Tomczak is the third Bulldogs scoring in double-figures at 10 points per game and is ranked in the conference in rebounding (6.1 pg/18), field goal percentage (.520/11) and offensive rebounds (2.3 pg/14).
 
As a team, Truman is averaging 72.1 points per game but allowing 68.4. The squad is shooting 43% overall from the floor and 40.3% from beyond the arc. At the free throw line, Truman is hitting 76% of their shots but opposing teams are making 84% from the line against the Bulldogs.
 
 
Truman vs. Wisconsin-Parkside (Friday 5:30 p.m. – Kirksville, Mo.)
Series History: This will be just the second meeting between the Bulldogs and Rangers with the last one coming a year ago in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Truman overcame a 10-point deficit to down Wisconsin-Parkside 74-68 to pick up the program's first GLVC victory.
UWP Last Time Out: The Rangers went 2-1 during a tour of Puerto Rico prior to the Christmas break. They defeated the University of Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras 60-41, UPR-Mayaguez 68-43 before being dealt a 63-59 loss to UPR-Bayamon on successive days. The Rangers played an exhibition game against the University of Toledo (Ohio) on Tuesday, December 30.
About the Rangers: UWP is 7-3 overall and 0-1 in the GLVC…won their first four games before a 59-54 loss at Upper Iowa University on November 25…lost 76-61 to Lewis (Ill.) University in the GLVC opener on December 4…led by senior guard Gaby Bronson at 13 points per game while adding 5.8 rebounds and a team-leading 57 assists…picked fifth with one first-place vote in the GLVC preseason coaches' poll…Bronson was a second-team all-GLVC player a season ago…team averages 65.4 points scoring and 56.0 points allowed per game…shoots 42% overall and 31% from three…was 8-18 (4-14) last season in Head Coach Jacob Yorg's first season as head coach.

Truman vs. #2 Lewis (Ill.) (Sunday 1:00 p.m. – Kirksville, Mo.)
Series History: Like the UWP Rangers, the Flyers will be making their first trip to Kirksville for a women's basketball game, however the two teams met twice during the Bulldogs inaugural run through the league. The Flyers soundly defeated Truman 98-72 back on January 3, 2014 in Romeoville, Illinois behind 26 points and 10 rebounds from the eventual GLVC Player of the Year Mariyah Brawner-Henley. The Bulldogs exacted some revenge on the Flyers by downing Lewis 84-70 in the quarterfinals of the GLVC Tournament in Evansville, Indiana on March 6.
Lewis Last Time Out: The Flyers will put their 11-game undefeated streak on the line Friday at Quincy (Ill.) University before Sunday's game in Kirksville. Lewis ended the non-conference season with a pair of home wins, a 68-58 victory over Northern Michigan on December 18 and a 78-65 win over Grand Valley (Mich.) State on December 21.
Common Opponents: The Bulldogs and Flyers share one non-conference opponent this season in Trevecca Nazarene (Tenn.). Truman defeated the Trojans 80-62 back on November 21 while Lewis downed TNU 96-71 with both games occurring in Nashville.
About The Flyers: In addition to the 11-0 start, the Flyers won three Division I exhibition games prior to the season…they defeated Loyola (Ill.) 83-61, Northern Illinois 60-49 and Marquette (Wisc.) 75-72…the Flyers have two of the top three scorers in the GLVC in redshirt junior Jamie Johnson (20.2/g) and senior Mariyah Brawner-Henley (17.5/g)…Brawner-Henley also leads the conference in boards at 13.3 per night and is the reigning GLVC Player of the Week and last season's Player of the Year…Lewis scores 82.5 points per game while giving up 64.5…they shoot 46% from the floor, 36% from the arc and 75% from the line with 45 rebounds per game…Lisa Carlsen enters her eighth season as head coach with a 117-86 record, two GLVC championships and three NCAA tournament berths.

Norton Moving Up Charts:
Allie Norton became the 19th Truman player to join the 1,000 point club earlier this season (1,081) and is tied for second in career three-point shooting at Truman with 230 made with Candace McGee. Norton is 39 away from the school record held by Wendi Sobaski at 269. Norton is moving up the career assists charts and sits ninth all-time with 258. She is tied for fourth in games played with 94.
Norton is the career-active leader in Division II in three-point shooting at 43.3% and is second among all three NCAA Divisions. Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis from UConn t is the active three-point leader at 44.2%.
She is second in Division II, 12th overall in three-pointers made and fifth (DII) 17th overall in three-pointers made per game (2.41).

Strait Shooting:
In her three seasons as a Bulldog, Courtney Strait has been nearly perfect from the charity stripe. Strait's career 90.5% free throw shooting percentage ranks first in Truman lore ahead of teammate Allie Norton's 86.8%. Megan Kahn is the non-active player career leader at 83% with a minimum of 100 made.

Double-Figure Games:
Allie Norton has 57 career double-digit scoring nights with nine 20+ point games. She set a new career-high of 29 points against Culver-Stockton the last time out.
Courtney Strait has 27 games in which she scored 10 or more points and seven games of 20 or more. Her career-high is 28 against Mount Mercy (Iowa) on December 21, 2012.
Michalina Tomczak has nine double-figure scoring games with a career-high of 25 against Cameron (Okla.) earlier this season.

Non-Conference Wrap-Up:
Seven of the team's first nine games have all come against Division II opponents (5-2), with three games against teams nationally ranked in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association/USA Today Top 25 poll. The Bulldogs suffered their worst defeat against #10 Pittsburg State on November 26 (102-45) then lost at eighth ranked West Texas A&M (63-49) on November 28. Truman's signature win so far was a 67-64 victory at previously undefeated #18 Missouri Southern on December 15.
 
In addition to the seven Division II games played, the Bulldogs competed in two exhibition games against Division I opponents. Truman lost to Arkansas State 83-53 before knocking off Alabama-Birmingham 67-61 in back-to-back games.
 
GLVC Preseason Coaches' Poll: The Truman Women's Basketball team was picked fourth in the Great Lakes Valley Conference West Division in the preseason coaches' poll and picked up two of the available 16 first-place votes. Quincy was picked second with 94 points and one first place vote.
 
Drury (Mo.) University nabbed 12 first-place votes in the West and earned 115 points to sit atop the division while Lewis (Ill.) University garnered 13 first-place votes and 118 overall to sit atop the East.

Tip-Ins:
  • The Bulldogs are 65-29 (.691) over the past four seasons, 36-21 (.632) in league games and 36-7 (.837) in games played in Pershing Arena during that span.
  • Truman finished fifth in the final Division II national rankings in free throw percentage last season (77.9%) and was fourth nationally in three-point field goal percentage (39.0%) and turnovers per game (12.2/g).
  • This season, Truman is second in Division II in personal fouls per game (12.3/game) and 11th nationally in free throw shooting percentage (77.8%).
  • Truman is averaging 7.7 three-pointers made per game.
  • The Bulldogs have used the same starting lineup for all nine games played this season. Allie Norton, Courtney Strait, Michalina Tomczak have been joined by redshirt freshman Ashley Hartwig and true freshman Rachel Steinhoff.
  • Senior Allison Weise, junior Sarah Gaeddert and redshirt freshman McKenzie Russell have appeared off the bench in all seven games played.
  • Off the court, Truman had three players, Michalina Tomczak, Nicole Gloor and Tawny Tucci, earn Academic All-GLVC.
 
 
Up Next:  The Bulldogs will continue their GLVC schedule with two more games against East Division schools. Truman will head out on the road to face McKendree (Ill.) University on January 8 and Illinois-Springfield on January 10.
