Opening Tip:
The Truman men's basketball team will look to maintain its undefeated start to the 2013-14 season this Saturday (Dec. 7) evening, as the Bulldogs partake in their first-ever Great Lakes Valley Conference contest in a visit to Quincy at 7:30 p.m.

The Bulldogs (4-0) went a perfect 2-for-2 at the Comfort Inn/Drury University Thanksgiving Classic last weekend, posting an 87-67 win against Cameron (Okla.) on Nov. 29 before fending off Northwest Missouri 81-77 on Nov. 30. The wins moved Truman to 4-0 for the first time since the 2008-09 campaign, while a win on Saturday could match that season's 5-0 start.

Truman and Quincy will be meeting for the 112th time in the long-standing series, although Saturday will mark the first time they've done so under the same league banner with the Bulldogs' move to the GLVC starting this season. The teams split two meetings last year, with QU rallying late to beat Truman 62-60 in Quincy on Nov. 20, 2012, before the Bulldogs trounced the host Hawks 76-50 in the semifinals of the QU Holiday Classic on Dec. 18, 2012.

This will be the first of two trips to Quincy this season, as the Bulldogs are once again competing in the QU Holiday Classic, this time facing Hillsdale (Mich.) on Dec. 21 and Central (Ohio) State on Dec. 22.

Conference-Opener Notes:
  • The Bulldogs will be playing their first game as a GLVC member after 86 years of competition in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association.
  • Truman will be attempting to win its second straight league-opener, as the Bulldogs defeated Missouri Western 71-69 to open MIAA play last season.
  • The Bulldogs haven't started 1-0 in league play in back-to-back seasons since the 1993-94 / 1994-95 years.
Top 'Dogs:
  • Truman boasts the GLVC's top turnover margin (+6.3) and assist-to-turnover ratio (1.9-to-1), while also ranking in the top-3 in scoring defense (60.8), scoring margin (+25.8), free throw percentage (78.4%), and steals (9.0/game).
  • Sophomore G Cory Myers is the GLVC leader in individual free throw shooting, converting 10-of-10 this season for a perfect 100%. Freshman G Kyle Kanaskie is right on his heels in third at 92.9% while also sitting second in assist-to-turnover ratio (4.67-to-1).
  • Junior G Reed Mells ranks third in both assists (5.0 per game) and steals (2.3 per game).

Scouting the Hawks:
Quincy enters the week with a 2-4 overall record and will play host to Benedictine-Springfield on Tuesday night prior to Truman's visit on Saturday. The Hawks have two NAIA wins this season and are 0-4 against Div. II competition.

The Hawks have had troubles scoring this year, ranking last in the GLVC in total offense (72.3 ppg) while also ranking 14th in rebounding margin (-2.2) and last in assist-to-turnover ratio (0.9-to-1). Chris Babbitt is the team's offensive leader at 15.7 ppg, having already gotten to the foul line 39 times this year. Scott Hahn (9.0 ppg) and Evan McGaughey (8.2 ppg) are next in line contributors on the scoring end.

Marty Bell is in his 10th season at the helm of the QU men's basketball program.

Carlson Goes for 30+:
For the second time in his career, senior F Mike Carlson surpassed the 30-point mark during last Friday's 20-point win against Cameron. The Wisconsin-native dropped 32 points on 13-for-22 shooting (5-for-10 3FG; 1-for-1 FT) in 37 minutes of action while also grabbing a team-high eight rebounds and swiping two passes. His previous career-high came at Central Missouri on Feb. 25, 2012 when he dropped 34 points on the Mules.

Jackson Adding Spark Off Bench:
Junior G/F Seth Jackson has been a key cog as the Bulldogs' sixth-man through the first four games of the season, ranking third on the team in scoring at 10.5 per game in just 18.0 minutes of average action. He is shooting 50% from the floor and 70% from the free throw line to go along with 4.8 rebounds per game (2nd on team).

"Mell"d-ing Nicely with New Squad:
Junior G Reed Mells has made an immediate impact during his first four games as a Bulldog, as the Missouri Western transfer has averaged a team-high 29.8 minutes per game and averaged 13.3 points and 5.0 assists per game. He met his average during the two-game Drury tournament, scoring 27 total points while dishing out eight combined assists.

Freshman Filling It Up:
Freshman G Kyle Kanaskie is the fourth Bulldog to be averaging double-figures through the first four games, as the Pennsylvania-native has dropped 10.3 points per game and shot 50% from the floor to start his collegiate career. While making just four three-pointers, three of them came at quite the opportune time, as he sank three straight early in the second half during the team's come-from-behind win against NWMSU on Nov. 30.

Making a Splash from Downtown:
The Bulldogs have made at least one three-pointer in every game since Feb. 12, 2003, a stretch of 283 consecutive games.

Bulldogs Pegged Fifth in GLVC West:
Head coach Matt Woodley's squad was picked to finish fifth in the GLVC West Division preseason coaches' poll.

The Bulldogs finished six points ahead of William Jewell for the fifth spot in the West division, as selected by all 16 league coaches. Defending NCAA Div. II national champion Drury (Mo.) earned 10 first-place votes and 115 total points to lead the West, while Maryville (Mo.) notched the remaining six first-place votes in the West to land second with 107 points.

A tight battle put third and fourth separated by just one point, with Missouri-St. Louis (87) and Quincy (86) taking those spots. The Bulldogs and WJC were followed by Missouri S&T (37) and Rockhurst (34) to round out the West.

On the Eastern side of the league, Bellarmine logged nine first-place votes and 113 total points to earn preseason favorite status, followed by Southern Indiana (101; three first-place votes), Indianapolis (95; two first-place votes) and Lewis (83; two first-place votes) in the top half. UW-Parkside, Illinois Springfield, Saint Joseph's and McKendree slid in fifth through eighth respectively.

The Bulldogs will play an 18-game conference slate in 2013-14 during their first season as GLVC members, playing Maryville, Missouri-St. Louis and Quincy twice each, while facing the other 12 programs just once. The top four teams from each division, along with four wild card teams, will qualify for the 12-team conference tournament that follows the regular season.

Up Next:
The Bulldogs take next the work-week off from Dec. 9-13 to complete the fall semester and finals before returning to action on Saturday, Dec. 14 at 6 p.m. against Concordia (Mo.) in Pershing Arena.
