Briggs Named Tournament MVP As Truman Defeats Lincoln Sunday

MARYVILLE, Mo. – Five Bulldogs scored in double-figures as Truman routed Lincoln (Mo.) 83-60 in day two of the Winstead-Reeves Classic hosted by Northwest Missouri State University. The Bulldogs are 3-0 on the season and will face regional heavyweight Grand Valley (Mich.) State on Friday in Nashville, Tenn.
 
Truman picked up their 23rd straight victory over the Blue Tigers dating back to 1998.
 
Freshman Megan Walsh gave Truman the lead for good as she started an 8-0 run five minutes into the contest. Walsh scored eight points over a six minute span with Allison Wiese following with a three-pointer to put Truman up by double-figures at 27-16 with 8:22 left in the half.
 
Truman scored the final nine points of the first half and the first four out of the locker room to lead by 26 and led by as many as 34.
 
Walsh, Wiese and Courtney Strait all scored 11 apiece while game-high honors went to Amy Briggs and Kasey Gassensmith with 12.
 
Truman shot 50% from the field and were 8-of-18 from beyond the arc while winning the rebounding battle 46 to 33.
 
Briggs was named the tournament's most valuable player and was joined on the all-tournament team by Allie Norton. The Bulldogs were the only team in the four-team tournament to have two players selected.
 
The Bulldogs shared the team title with fellow Great Lakes Valley Conference member William Jewell (Mo.) College as the Cardinals also went 2-0 with a two-point win over the host Bearcats in the nightcap on Sunday.
 
Truman will take part in the Trevecca Nazarene (Tenn.) Tournament next weekend in Nashville and will start with Grand Valley State on Friday at 7:30 p.m. The Lakers were 19-8 a year ago and will be playing their first regular season game after splitting a pair of exhibition games.
