Mercy! 'Dogs Shoot Lights Out In 110-43 Rout Over Mustangs

Box Score

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – The Truman Women's Basketball team busted out of winter break by shattering the school and conference record for three-pointers made in a game with a 110-43 trouncing of Mount Mercy (Iowa) College on New Year's Eve. The Bulldogs drained 22 triples with freshman Courtney Strait knocking down eight for a game-high 28 points.

Sophomore Allie Norton started the barrage with two straight to start the contest and senior Becka McHenry scored the next five to build up an 11-0 lead over the visiting Mustangs (3-13). Truman (8-2) would lead 47-13 at the half.

Truman would make their first 13 three-point attempts to start the second half with Strait connecting on all seven of her attempts. The Bulldogs would not miss from beyond the arc until 2:26 left in the game. The 13 consecutive three-pointers is a new NCAA Division II record, previously held by Texas A&M-Kingsville against Texas A&M-International back on November 30, 2009.

The eight three-pointers by the freshman tied for the third most by a Bulldog with Laura Cooper's eight against Northwest Missouri on January 2006. Strait finished with a Bulldog season-high 28 points and every Truman play scored in the game.

Norton finished with five triples and 15 points, Amy Briggs added four for 14 points and 10 assists and Nicole Gloor (12) and Jessica Redd (11) also finished in double-figures for the Bulldogs who won their seventh straight game in Pershing Arena.

Truman made 22 of 31 (71.0%) three-pointers which shattered the previous school record of 15 and the three-point field goal percentage mark. The previous record was set twice against Central Methodist (Mo.) in 2011 and Westminster (Mo.) in 2002. The highest percentage was also against Central Methodist when Truman went 15-of-24 (62%).

The 22 triples set a new benchmark in the MIAA as the previous high was 20 held by Emporia (Kan.) State against Missouri Western in January 2010 and again by Central Missouri against Benedictine (Kan.) in 2011. It was the eighth most single-game three-pointers all-time in the NCAA Division II.

The Bulldogs also set school records in overall field goal shooting percentage (39-of-60; 65% - previously 37-of-58; 63.8% against Lincoln in 1979) and made all 10 of their free throw attempts, tying a school mark achieved four different times with a minimum of 10 made.  The 110 points scored tied for fourth all-time and the most since 111 against Harris-Stowe (Mo.) in 1997.

Amanda Frost was the lone offense for the Mustangs scoring 22 points, 18 in the second half.

Truman will open the conference season in earnest on Thursday night when they host Lincoln (Mo.) University at 5:30 p.m. in Pershing Arena. The Bulldogs will play six of their next eight games in Kirksville.
