Coaches' Clipboard:
1) Maintain for 40: Truman used a pair of quick bursts to jump out to an early 18-point lead the first time against QU this season, but scored just seven points in the final 10 minutes of the first half to allow the Hawks to crawl within three at the break. The Bulldogs have been better in the first half all season, shooting 48% overall and 41% from three, while out-rebounding the opposition as well.
2) Keep the Hawks off the Line: Quincy is one of the top free throw shooting teams in the country, connecting at a 75.6% clip from the charity stripe this season.
3) Battle on the Glass: The Bulldogs are the top MIAA team in defensive rebounding percentage (limiting teams to just one shot on a possession), while Quincy ranks 13th in the GLVC in total offensive boards. Maintaining those numbers should help the 'Dogs against a QU squad that shoots just 42% from the floor.

Bulldog Tip-Ins:

  • Truman is shooting 44.0% from the field as a team so far in 2012-13, including a 34.0% mark from three-point range.
  • The 'Dogs rank in the top-third of the MIAA in three-pointers made per game (3rd; 7.9), defensive rebound totals (27.7; 4th), turnover margin (+2.9; 4th), assists (14.7; 5th) and steals (8.1; 5th).
  • Truman is shooting 67.6% overall from the free throw line this season but has been above that number in each of the last two games (70.8% at MWSU; 81.0% vs. MSSU).
  • Isaac Gardner continues to be one of the MIAA's top snipers, averaging 2.6 three pointers per game – good for third in the league.

Good to See You Again:
With Truman's move to the Great Lakes Valley Conference in place for next season, the Bulldogs got a one-year jump on facing the Hawks twice in a season, having met earlier this year on Nov. 20 in Quincy. The Hawks got the better of that contest, benefiting from a last-second jumper by Jordan Wilson to complete a comeback and win 62-60. Truman held leads of 13-0 and 20-2 in the early going, but fell behind by seven with 3:17 to play before a quick 7-0 blitz knotted the score at 60 with 37 seconds to play. Isaac Gardner led all Bulldogs with a dozen points, with Marek Bush adding 10 points and nine rebounds.

Since then, both teams have gone 2-1, with the Hawks losing by 18 at Central Missouri, winning by seven against Lindenwood at home, and sliding past Illinois-Soringfield in overtime at home on Dec. 8. Both teams will have been off since the 8th prior to Tuesday's contest.

Carlson at the Charity Stripe:
Mike Carlson is 23-for-24 from the free throw line this season, putting him first in the MIAA and sixth in NCAA Div. II at 95.8%. He has made 20 in a row, dating back to the second game of the season against Upper Iowa.

Carlson has a bit to go to reach Truman's consecutive free throws converted streak, set in the 2009-10 season by then-freshman Tom Norton, who sank 31 straight. The MIAA record is 36.

Dialing Long Distance:
The Bulldogs have taken an average of 23.1 three-point attempts per game so far this season, including a 10-year high of 37 in last Wednesday night's game at Missouri Western.

Turning the Red Shirts Purple:
Senior Tom Norton and freshman Jaylon Jones were both tagged at the beginning of the season as planning on using a redshirt year; however, head coach Matt Woodley put both players in uniform for last Wednesday night's game at Missouri Western. Each player saw action in both games last week.

Scouting the Hawks:
Quincy is 4-2 this season, benefitting heavily from a 4-1 home record, including wins against both Truman and fellow MIAA member Lindenwood. The Hawks have a scoring margin of -0.7, shooting 42% from the floor and just 32% from the three-point line.

Tyler Thompson leads the Hawks at 12.7 ppg, while Chris Babbitt checks in at 12.3 ppg and a team-high 5.2 rpg. Scott Hahn is the team's top three-point shooter, connecting for less than two per game but hitting at a 63% clip.

Marty Bell is in his 10th season as the head coach of the QU men's basketball program.

Bulldogs Notables vs. QU:

Five Peas in an MIAA Pod:
For the 2012-13 season, the MIAA will be invoking a “pod” system for basketball scheduling, resulting in 18 league matches for all 15 of the conference's schools. While all 15 teams will fall under set of standings with no delineation between pods, Truman will play Central Missouri, Lincoln, Southwest Baptist and newcomer-Lindenwood twice each as part of one five-team grouping.

Emporia State, Missouri Southern and Pittsburg State will join with newcomers Central Oklahoma and Northeastern State as a second pod, while Northwest Missouri, Missouri Western, Washburn and Fort Hays will align with the final newcomer, Nebraska-Kearney, in a third pod.

At the end of the season, the top 12 teams will compete for the MIAA men's basketball championship. First-round games will be played on Monday, March 4 on campus sites with the top-4 teams and the first-round winners advancing to Kansas City for the remainder of the tournament as usual.

For a full game-by-game breakdown of MIAA standings and schedules, check the full set of game notes linked at the top of this page.

Up Next:
The Bulldogs will face the corresponding winner/loser of the Northeastern State/Ohio Valley game on Wednesday, Dec. 19. From there, Truman takes off the holiday stretch until a Sunday, Dec. 30 home game against another future GLVC foe – Maryville (Mo.). The Bulldogs and Saints will tipoff at 3:00 pm in Pershing Arena.
