Well, for Starters…:
The Bulldogs have done damage in the first half of games this season, shooting just shy of 50% from the field (49.6%) and outscoring opponents by nearly eight points in the first 20 minutes of games. In the last three contests (QU, CCCB, ISU-exh), Truman has gotten out to leads of 20-2, 30-1 and 7-0 in the opening minutes.

Nailbiters for the Bulldogs:
After seeing 13 of its 28 games last season finish within a six point or closer margin, 2013 has already begun to replicate that, with all three of Truman's losses coming within five points (5, 3, 2). The Bulldogs went 3-10 in the 13 close games last season.

Last Time Out:
November 20, 2012 – @ Quincy 62, Truman 60
Quincy's Jordan Wilson hit a jumper with just 0.7 seconds to play, capping a comeback by the host Hawks to defeat the Truman men's basketball team 62-60 on Nov. 20 in Pepsi Arena.

Isaac Gardner hit four triples off the bench for a team-high 12 points, with Marek Bush adding 10 points and nine rebounds in 23 minutes off the bench. The Bulldogs shot 36% from the field overall, 24% from three-point range and 78% from the free throw line.

Bulldog Tip-Ins:

  • Truman is shooting 45.5% from the field as a team so far in 2012-13, including a 32.6% mark from three-point range.
  • The 'Dogs are getting to the free throw line an average of 20.5 times per game and are connecting at a 64.6% rate.
  • The Bulldogs have a 1.28 assist-to-turnover ratio on the year, forcing 69 turnovers while committing just 46 of their own.
  • Minutes have been distributed well amongst Woodley's squad, with seven players ranging between 19.0 and 23.0 minutes per game. Two players are averaging 26-27 minutes per contest.

Scouting the Vikings:
Grand View, an NAIA member of the Midwest Collegiate Conference, will be looking for its third straight win when it visits Kirksville on Wednesday night. GVU is 5-4 on the season, having earned back-to-back wins against Ashford (68-64) and Simpson (58-46) its last two times out.

The Vikings are just 1-3 away from home, averaging 60.0 points on the road compared to a 73.3 ppg average at home. Kody Ingle is averaging 13.9 points per game to lead the squad, hitting a team-high 17 triples and shooting 47% overall from the floor. GVU has featured the same starting five in all nine contests, with the first line contributing 44 ppg.

Last season, the Bulldogs used a 47-37 second half advantage to defeat GVU 76-62 in Des Moines. Ton Norton scored 27 points, with EJ Hicks (14) and Seth Jackson (12) reaching double-figures off the bench. GVU's top two scorers from that game – Kevin Smith (19p/11r) and Josh Henry (17p) are no longer on the squad.

Dennis Schaefer is in his 15th season at the helm of the GVU program. Current Truman assistant Todd Lorensen played three seasons under Schaefer and assisted him for one, while head coach Matt Woodley's father is the head football coach at the school.

Bulldogs Picked 12th in MIAA Preseason Poll:
Truman was picked to finish 12th by the regional media and 13th by league coaches in the 2012-13 unveiling of the MIAA basketball preseason polls. The Bulldogs earned 54 points in the coaches' poll, trailing Missouri Western for 12th, but traded places with the Griffons in the media poll, earning 89 total points.

Washburn picked up the top spot in both polls, with Central Missouri and Northwest Missouri ranking second and third in each as well.

New Year, Familiar Faces:
The Bulldogs are coming off a 2011-12 season that saw them graduate just one senior, meaning all five starters and eight total letterwinners return this year. Truman brings back 92.6% of its scoring, 87.3% of its rebounding and 98.5% of its total assists in 2012-13.

Included in that is the returning MIAA Freshman of the Year, Seth Jackson, who also earned all-conference accolades alongside then-junior teammate Tom Norton. While Jackson is inked to start this season, Norton will be taking a redshirt to recover from an off-season injury, returning for his senior season in 2013-14.

Five Peas in an MIAA Pod:
For the 2012-13 season, the MIAA will be invoking a “pod” system for basketball scheduling, resulting in 18 league matches for all 15 of the conference's schools. While all 15 teams will fall under set of standings with no delineation between pods, Truman will play Central Missouri, Lincoln, Southwest Baptist and newcomer-Lindenwood and Southwest Baptist twice each as part of one five-team grouping.

Emporia State, Missouri Southern and Pittsburg State will join with newcomers Central Oklahoma and Northeastern State as a second pod, while Northwest Missouri, Missouri Western, Washburn and Fort Hays will align with the final newcomer, Nebraska-Kearney, in a third pod.

At the end of the season, the top 12 teams will compete for the MIAA men's basketball championship. First-round games will be played on Monday, March 4 on campus sites with the top-4 teams and the first-round winners advancing to Kansas City for the remainder of the tournament as usual.

Up Next:
The Bulldogs take a week off before starting MIAA play with a Wednesday night (Dec. 5) tilt at Missouri Western. Tipoff in St. Joseph next week is set for 7:30 pm.
