Bulldogs Defeated at Home by Hawks

Box Score | Season Stats

KIRKSVILLE - - Senior Charlie Backus scored his second goal of the season to go with an MIAA-leading seven assists, but the Truman men's soccer team fell 4-1 at home to in-state rival Rockhurst on Wednesday afternoon at the Bulldog Soccer Pitch.

16th-ranked Rockhurst (8-1-2) used goals in the 14th and 42nd minutes to carry a 2-0 lead into the intermission before Backus (St. Louis, Mo., CBC) – off a feed from fellow senior Andy Chapman (St. Louis, Mo., Fort Zumwalt South) – cut the Hawk lead to one with a 60th minute goal. However, Rockhurst recovered less than three minutes later to score and push the lead back to two before getting an 89th-minute tap-in for the 4-1 final margin.

Despite the final outcome on the board, the Bulldogs (5-4-1) played relatively evenly in possession with the nationally-ranked Hawks, only being out-shot 16-12 overall and earning eight corners to the Hawks' seven. Drew Garrone (Chesterfield, Mo., Lafayette) made six saves in net for the purple and white.

Four different Hawks scored, with Mark Magee earning the credit for three assists.

Truman returns to action on Saturday afternoon, remaining out of MIAA play with a 2:00 pm match at Iowa Wesleyan.
