Box Score

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – A big start to the second half lifted the Truman women's basketball team to a convincing 78-60 victory over 17th-ranked Emporia State University (Kan.) Lady Hornets on Saturday afternoon. It was the third time this season Truman has knocked off a ranked opponent.

The Bulldogs (11-7; 6-7 MIAA) kept the Lady Hornets (14-4; 10-3 MIAA) within reach early in the first half, never allowing them to carry more than a six point lead. As the half progressed, the 'Dogs chipped away at a Lady Hornet lead before ultimately taking advantage after a Nicole Gloor (Overland Park, Kan., Blue Valley) lay-up with 7:01 left in the first half. A jumper by Jennifer Conway (Waterloo, Ill., Waterloo) with 39 seconds left in the period gave Truman a five-point edge over Emporia at half.

Gloor led the bench in the first half as she sparked the Bulldogs for 14 points in 14 minutes.
After an Emporia lay-up at the start of the second half, the Bulldogs launched back-to-back-to-back three's by Breanna Daniels (Ridgedale, Mo., Hollister), Becka McHenry (Fraser, Mich., Fraser), and Allie Norton (Bloomington, Ill., Central Catholic) followed by a lay-up by Bianca Szafarowicz (Wheeling, Ill., Wheeling) that would end up resulting in an 11-0 run against the Lady Hornets.

Truman would continue to build their lead up to 20 before Emporia would go on an 8-0 run with 5:42 left in the game.

The 'Dogs would respond and outscore Emporia 12-6 in the final five and a half minutes.

Five Bulldogs finished the contest with double-digit points, led by Gloor and Conway's 17. Conway recorded a double-double after snatching 11 rebounds. McHenry added 12 with eight assists of her own while Daniels and Megan Sharpe (Edwardsville, Ill., Edwardsville) each recorded 10 points apiece.

The 'Dogs outrebounded Emporia State 46-38 while having 16 offensive boards that resulted in 17 second chance points.

This afternoon's victory snapped a seven game losing streak against the Lady Hornets, with the 'Dogs last victory coming at the MIAA tournament on March 6th, 2008. The last home victory against Emporia happened over a decade ago on January 12th, 2002.

Rachel Hanf led the Lady Hornet offense with 13 points, 11 of which came in the first half. The Truman defense held Merissa Quick to only four points, almost eight points below her season average.

The Bulldogs will look for the season swept against the Washburn (Kan.) Lady Blues in Kirksville on Wednesday, February 1st. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 pm in Pershing Arena.
