Men's Soccer Takes 2-1 Win at Quincy

Box Score

QUINCY, Ill. - - Junior forward Andy Chapman scored a goal and assisted on what would prove to be the game-winner, as the No. 15 Truman men's soccer team wrapped up the 2011 Quincy Bowl with a 2-1 win against the host QU Hawks on Sunday night.

The Bulldogs (1-1) took home second place in the four-team Classic, moving to 6-0-2 all-time against QU in their own event.

Quincy found pay-dirt first, getting a breakaway goal from Grant Ellison in the 17th minute to jump ahead 1-0. However, the Bulldogs evened the score and put in their first goal of the season in the 25th minute when senior midfielder Jonathan Brown found Chapman off a restart for the equalizer. It was the 11th career goal for Chapman and 18th career assist for Brown.

Truman then got an unorthodox double-assisted goal, started by junior goalkeeper Tyler Knierim just six minutes later. Knierim played a ball to Chapman, who immediately found sophomore Daniel Jack for the go-ahead goal in the 31st minute.

The two teams would battle for the final 60 minutes, each putting numerous shots on frame, but Knierim and freshman Drew Garrone – who entered to play the second half – slammed the door shut on a QU (1-1) comeback.

Knierim made three saves in his first half of work, while Garrone made a pair of saves in the second half to preserve the one-goal victory.

Truman stays on the road next weekend for a trip to Colorado, facing Fort Lewis and Dixie (Utah) State next Friday and Sunday.
