Northwest Holds On For 73-72 Double Overtime Thriller Over Bulldogs

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – In one of the hardest fought games of the season, the Northwest Missouri Bearcats outscored the Truman Bulldogs 11-10 in double overtime to escape with a 73-72 victory on Saturday night in Pershing Arena.

Breanna Daniels knocked down a three-pointer on Truman's opening possession of the first overtime and the Bulldogs held that lead until Ashley Thayer hit the Bearcats' (10-2 overall; 6-2 MIAA) only second three-pointer of the game with 39 seconds left to knot the score at 62 apiece.

Both teams missed shots down the stretch to send the game to a second extra five minutes.

Nicole Gloor gave Truman (6-6; 4-4 MIAA) the lead in the second overtime with a trey only to watch Thayer drop in her second triple at the 3:31 mark.

Megan Sharpe tied the game back up with a minute to play and the Bulldogs then forced a turnover by Gentry Dietz underneath the Truman basket.

However, on the ensuing inbounds play, the Bulldogs got called for a five-second violation and Gabby Curtis took advantage by hitting a jumper in the paint with 38 seconds left to put the Bearcats up by two.

The Bulldogs couldn't covert on the offensive end while Monai Douglass made one of two free throw attempts to keep it to a one possession game at 73-70. 

Following a timeout, Truman went for the tying three but it fell short.  Sharpe collected her ninth offensive rebound and made an uncontested layup before time ran out on the Bulldogs.

Truman dominated the glass grabbing 60 rebounds to the Bearcats' 44 and had 27 offensive boards with Sharpe's nine, Jennifer Conway's seven and Daniels' six.  Truman also held the highest scoring team in the conference to 27 points below there season average at 53 following the conclusion of regulation. The Bulldogs also had a season-high eight three-pointers.

The Bulldog defense limited the second leading scoring in the conference, Abby Henry (17.1/g) to just six points on 1-of-11 shooting.

Career nights for Sharpe and Conway as the sophomores both recorded double-doubles.  Sharpe had 15 rebounds with 12 points while Conway grabbed 14 to go with 13 points.  Daniels made it 16 straight games in double figures with 13 points to match Conway in team high honors.

Truman shot just 32% from the field and were 9-of-26 in the first half that allowed the Bearcats to erase a 10-point Bulldog lead and head into the locker room with a three-point advantage.

Conway gave Truman a two-point lead with 1:50 to play in regulation but Kyla Roehrig and Dietz scored four straight to put Northwest up by two with 40 seconds left. Gloor found Conway open at the right block to tie the game at 53 with 16 seconds showing and Northwest could not get a good look as time expired in the first 40 minutes.

Dietz scored a game-high 27 points while snatching 11 rebounds for the Bearcats who won their sixth straight game in MIAA play.

Truman will continue their three-game homestand with a Wednesday night match-up with Missouri Western on Wednesday night at 5:30 p.m.
