Game Preview:

Two road games in a three-day span await the Truman Women's Basketball team as they open 2011 portion of their season on Monday night in Hays, Kan.  The Bulldogs will face Fort Hays State on Monday night and then travel and play the University of Nebraska-Omaha on Wednesday night with both games tipping off at 5:30 p.m.

Last year the Bulldogs came away with two road wins on this trip and will be looking for their fourth consecutive road victory when they tip off against the Tigers on Monday.

Truman played their final non-conference game against the University of Illinois-Springfield last Wednesday night and came away with a dominating 17-point victory.  The Bulldogs grabbed 48 rebounds with 19 on the offensive end while the Prairie Stars mustered just 18 total rebounds in the 67-50 victory on the road.  Breanna Daniels led all scorers with 20 points while Erin Glogovsky pulled down 10 rebounds.

Daniels is fourth in the conference in scoring at 16.3 points per game and has scored in double figures in 14 straight games dating back to last season.  The 20 point outing against UIS was her sixth of her career and second this season.  She is shooting 41% from the field and 41% from beyond the arc.

The Bulldogs are ranked in the top five in the MIAA in scoring defense (59.8/ppg allowed-5th), field goal percentage (.419 – 5th), defensive three-point field goal percentage (.292 – 3rd), free throw percentage (.739 – 2nd), rebounding defense (24.8 – 2nd), and rebounding margin (+6.8 – 4th).

About Fort Hays State

After starting the season 5-1, the Tigers have lost their last three and sit at 5-4 overall and 2-3 in the MIAA.  Fort Hays is 5-0 in games played at Gross Memorial Coliseum with a 76-70 win over Nebraska-Omaha in their last outing at home on Dec. 3rd.

Kimber Weiser leads the Tigers in scoring at 10.2 points per game while Fort Hays has a mostly balanced scoring attack with seven other players averaging over five points per game.  Kaniesha Pettaway is third in the MIAA in assists per game at 4.0 and Janel Durler is fourth in blocked shots at two per game.

Fort Hays is currently the top three-point shooting team in the league at 7.6 made per game and third in the conference in steals per contest at 11.1.  They are second in turnover margin at a plus 4.9 per game.

The Tigers lost 71-65 at Northwest Missouri in their last action on Dec. 18.  Tracy Keyser scored a Tiger season-high 31 points in the loss while going a perfect 12-of-12 from the foul line.

Last Year's Recap vs. Fort Hays:

The Bulldogs and Tigers split last seasons meetings with each team winning on the road.  The Tigers won 67-60 in Pershing Arena on Jan. 2 behind 21 points from Naomi Bancroft.  Breanna Daniels scored 15 for Truman.

In the Bulldogs 63-61 win at Hays, Daniels scored 19 points with Becka McHenry scoring the teams final six points of the game.  McHenry layup with 45 seconds left gave Truman their first lead since the start of the game and erased a 12-point deficit with just over 13 minutes to play.  It was the first road conference win for Truman.

About Nebraska-Omaha:

UNO will play at Missouri Western on Sunday prior to the Bulldogs visit on Wednesday night.  The Mavericks enter that game following a 76-62 victory over Lincoln University that snapped a four-game conference loosing streak.

Heather Pohl leads the Mavericks in scoring at 14.8 points per game and is seventh in the MIAA.  Jamie Nash is tops in the league in steals per game at 4.5 which has enabled the Mavericks to currently lead the league in that category as a team with 11.7 steals per game.

Nebraska-Omaha is also currently the top free throw shooting team in the conference at 74.8% but has the 10th best scoring defense allowing 64.3 points per game.

Last Year vs. the Mavericks:

In the first meeting last season a poor shooting start by the Bulldogs had them down nine at halftime and the Mavericks went on to win 58-44 in Kirksville.  Alyssa Green scored 21 points for UNO while Laura Joya had a team-high 12 for the Bulldogs.

A reversal of sorts took place in Omaha on Feb. 13th as Truman shot 50% in the first half and UNO shot just 23% in the second half allowing the Bulldogs to take a 59-52 victory over the Mavericks.  Green had 15 for UNO while Joya scored 16 for the Bulldogs.

Bulldog Coaching Staff:

Head Coach Michael Smith enters his third year at the helm of the Truman Women's Basketball program.  Smith was 8-19 in his first season and improved by three games last year to 11-16.  The Bulldogs won six of their first 10 games and four of their last five in 2009-10.

Smith took over the program in April of 2008 and was previously the assistant coach at Division I University of Arkansas-Little Rock.
