Bulldogs Can't Dig Out Of First Half Hole

INDIANAPOLIS - #22 Indianapolis raced out to a large lead and the Truman women's basketball team could not reel them in as the Bulldogs fell 87-74 on the road Thursday night in the first of two from the Hoosier State. Truman returns to action Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. at Saint Joseph's College.

An 8-1 spurt just past the midway portion of the first half allowed the Greyhounds to push a five-point lead to double-figures where it stayed most of the way. Truman was held without a three-pointer in the first 20 minutes while UIndy shot 59% from the field including 26 points in the paint and 15 off of fast breaks.

Truman made things interesting by scoring 14 straight points with just under six minutes to play. The 'Hounds took their largest lead at 77-55 with 6:10 showing on the clock. Linnea Schmelzer keyed a pair of free throws and later hit a three-pointer and when Allie Norton's triple fell through at the 2:05 mark, the Bulldogs had cut the deficit to eight points.

Erin Murphy's bucket ended the threat and Murphy along with Rose Savela clinched the victory at the foul line with six straight points from the stripe.

The Bulldogs made five three-pointers in the final 20 minutes but were just 31% from outside and 41% overall. Nicole Gloor had game-high honors for the Bulldogs with 21 points and Bianca Szafarowicz added her fifth double-double of the season with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Norton scored just five points but dished out a season-high eight assists.

The Greyhounds shot 56% from the field while getting 24 from Murphy and 15 from Savela. Indianapolis scored 46 of their 87 points in the pain, 19 off of 15 Bulldog turnovers and 22 fast break points.

Truman will continue the road trip on Saturday afternoon at Saint Joseph's College in Rensselaer, Ind. The Pumas were downed by West Division leading Quincy (Ill.) 70-60 on Thursday night. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
