John Nash

Sociology/Anthropology Major – Anthropology

John NashWhat co-curricular or extracurricular activities were you involved in?

Anthropology Club, Wildlife Society

What are you doing now?

Running a small grant office at Truman recruiting and training STEM majors to become teachers.

How did you get to this place in your life/ career?

I planned to stay local after graduation and sought career opportunities where a SOAN background would be a good fit.

Have you been to graduate school? If so, where did you go? Did you go right after graduating from Truman?

No.

Do you have any advice for Truman students who are interested in going to graduate school?

No.

How has the education you’ve received from Truman helped you?

In general a liberal arts degree facilitates life-long learning and adaptability. In my specific case it made me work harder on building critical thinking and communication skills.

Is/are there any particular class(es) you’re glad you took? Did you like it/them at that the time?

I felt Data Analysis and Reporting would be the end of my college career at times. I’m thankful for the opportunity to push myself way beyond my comfort level.

What is your favorite memory of your time at Truman?

Spending time exploring nature in the surrounding area through hiking, camping, and running. Anthro classes would be a close second.

Why is Truman a good school at which to study?

Truman is a good school to study because the liberal arts curriculum and quality of instruction produce well rounded graduates who can succeed on many levels.

Do you have any advice for someone wanting to go into the same line of work as you?

Your education gives you a strong skill set. Don’t be afraid to pursue careers that might not be a perfect match to your degree.

What do you miss most about campus life/ living in Kirksville?

I never left so I’m not missing much.

If you could teach current students one thing, what would it be?

I would teach them what the liberal arts are really about. It’s so much more than taking classes across disciplines.
