Dr. Jill Phillips

Dr. Jill Phillips, mezzo-soprano, teaches voice at Truman State University in Kirksville, Missouri. Last summer, she taught voice at the nationally known Lutheran Summer Music Academy and Festival at Valparaiso University in Valparaiso, Indiana, and she looks forward to returning this summer. Most recently, Dr. Phillips was on the voice faculty at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa.
In addition to teaching, she remains an active performer. She has performed with the Elm Ensemble in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and with the Twin Ports Choral Project in Duluth, Minnesota. Dr. Phillips has sung the alto solos in J.S. Bach's Mass in B minor at Cincinnati’s Christ Church Cathedral and has performed as an alto soloist with the Bach Ensemble of St. Thomas in Terrace Park, Ohio, and with the Peoria Bach Festival. She was the alto soloist in the Verdi Requiem with Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois.
She received her Doctor of Musical Arts and Master of Music degrees in voice from the University of Cincinnati's College-Conservatory of Music (CCM). While at CCM, she sang the roles of Marcellina in Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro, the Old Prioress in Poulenc’s Dialogues of the Carmelites, and Baba the Turk in Stravinsky’s The Rake’s Progress. In addition, she participated in the Opera Fusion: New Works project with CCM and Cincinnati Opera.
Dr. Phillips was a Studio Artist at Wolf Trap Opera in Vienna, Virginia, and was a Young Artist at Opera Saratoga in Saratoga Springs, New York, where she covered the roles of Dido in Purcell's Dido and Aeneas and Cenerentola in La Cenerentola. She was an Apprentice Artist with Des Moines Metro Opera (DMMO) and made her mainstage debut at DMMO as the Zweite Mägd in the company's production of Elektra. Additionally, she has sung with Kentucky Opera and Dayton Opera.
Dr. Phillips has performed scenes from such operas as Anna Bolena, Cendrillon, The Crucible, Dead Man Walking, Don Carlo, Giulio Cesare, L'italiana in Algeri, Peter Grimes, and Vanessa.
She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. While at Luther College, she performed in the opera scenes program and the spring opera productions.
