Why did you choose Truman?

I chose Truman because the moment I stepped on campus it felt like my home away from home. Truman has a contagious energy about it, and that was an energy that I wanted to call my own. Even more so, Truman is a beautiful place to learn and foster relationships. Also, the affordability that Truman offers will allow me to graduate with no student loans which will propel me into a graduate program more easily than if I had debt.

Why did you choose your major?

I chose Vocal Performance because I attended a Fine Arts high school. I wanted to take the training I had learned there and apply it at the collegiate level. Music has always been a part of my life; it did not make sense to drop it in college! I chose Sociology/Anthropology as my second major because I have a passion for people and learning about what makes them act in the ways they do. I am hoping to combine these two degrees into a Master of Arts in Ethnomusicology.

Now that you are a student, what do you like most about being a Truman student?

I love the small class sizes! The personalized approaches help to make you feel that your education is being valued. Getting to know your professors on a deeper level in smaller classes allows for a trust and respect in the classroom that goes both ways between the teacher and the student.

What piece of advice would you give to first-year students?

The piece of advice I would give first-year students would be to try everything. Join all of the clubs and activities you want; take what you love, and run with it. But, know that you can not continue in this crazy way of living all throughout college. After joining many clubs for a trial period, pick a few and stick with those. This way, you are more involved in a few things, and not spread thin across all the things you love.

What is your best or favorite experience of your first year at Truman?

Truman Week was one of the best experiences of my first-year at Truman. The team-player attitudes of Missouri Hall helped us to bring home the College Cup. Specifically, the Relay Races at Stokes Stadium were a highlight of the week for me. There is a strong feeling of comradery that is instilled through the activities of that week. You create friendships that will last beyond your college years.

What is your favorite thing about living in Kirksville?

I love that the Kirksville community loves to be outside. From the festivals, to all the people at Thousand Hills, the outdoor activities drew me to this community. The small town charm is so real and alive in this town and I have fallen in love with it!
