Accounting Advisory Board
Tom O’Brien (’01, ’02), Chair
Tom O’Brien serves as the Vice President-Controller for Schnuck Markets, Inc., a family-owned regional supermarket retailer based in St. Louis, Mo. His responsibilities include overseeing the company’s accounting, financial reporting, and tax functions.
Prior to joining Schnucks, Tom served as Manager of Financial Reporting at Caleres (formerly Brown Shoe Company), which was preceded by over eight years of experience in public accounting at Ernst & Young, where he provided external audit services to clients in both the public and private sectors.
Tom is a Certified Public Accountant and holds both a Bachelor of Science-Accounting and a Master of Accountancy degree from Truman State University, where he graduated magna cum laude.
Matthew Azar (’98)
Matthew Azar serves as Director of Boeing ‘s Defense and Security Financial Policy and Reporting. Matt started his career in public accounting; earned a BS in Accounting from Truman in 1998 and an MBA from the Olin Business School at Washington University in 2006.
Ben Brouse (’06)
Ben Brouse is Director of Tax at Seaboard Corporation. Prior to his role at Seaboard, Ben led the tax function at Hostess Brands, LLC for seven years as well as spent ten years at KPMG in business tax services. Aside from his job at Seaboard, Ben is the treasurer of Foster Adopt Connect and a board member for the Kansas City Chapter of TEI. His wife, Nichole (’06), earned a degree in nursing from Truman. They have three children, Connor, Endsley, and Camryn, who are hopefully future Bulldogs.
Matt Doyle (’01, ’02)
Matt Doyle is a partner in the PwC St. Louis Trust Solutions practice with over 20 years of experience. Matt has significant technical accounting and financial reporting skills and has helped his clients through numerous business activities, including acquisitions, divestitures, restructurings, system implementations, spin-offs and debt and equity capital raising offerings. He has extensive experience with SEC registrant clients and related SEC reporting requirements. Matt obtained his Master of Accounting degree from Truman State University in May 2002.
In addition to the Truman State Accounting Advisory Board, Matt is also the President of the Board of Directors of the Independence Center, a community-based rehabilitation program for adults with severe and persistent mental illnesses based in St. Louis, Mo. He also serves as a member of the University of Missouri St. Louis Accounting Advisory Board and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Lower Plains Region Board.
Kris Kueker (’04, ’05)
Kris Kueker serves as the Head of Internal Audit and Risk for Bunzl Group. Formerly, he served as the Director of Internal Audit for Bunzl North America. Kris started his career with RubinBrown in public accounting and for seven years was at the Monsanto Company. Kris earned a BS in Accounting from Truman in 2004 and a Master of Accounting in 2005.
Jennifer Lovell (’04, ’05)
Jennifer Lovell, CPA, is a tax partner with the regional accounting firm Harden, Cummins, Moss & Miller, LLC, where she has been employed since graduating from Truman over 17 years ago. She enjoys assisting a wide range of individual, business, and non-profit clients with their tax and accounting needs. She is also involved with several local organizations, including serving on the local Saint Luke’s Hospital board and being an active member of the local Rotary Club.
Jennifer earned her Bachelor of Science in Accounting (’04) and Master of Accounting (’05) degrees while at Truman. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her family, taking walks with her dog, traveling, reading, and experiencing the outdoors.
Sally Mattie (’10, ’11)
Sally Mattie graduated from Truman State University in 2010 and subsequently received her Master of Accountancy in 2011. She started her career in public accounting with Deloitte and transitioned to tax provision with various publicly traded companies including McKesson, Snap Inc, Emerson Electric, and Cigna. She lives in St. Louis with her husband, Randy (also a 2011 Truman alum), and their two children, Felix and Quinn. They love traveling and being outdoors.
Matthew Mehner (’03, ’04)
Matthew Mehner is a partner in the KPMG St. Louis audit practice with 18 years of experience providing audit services to clients in various industries, including renewal energy, manufacturing, consumer markets, healthcare insurance, retail, and telecommunications, with SEC registrants ranging from various-sized domestic entities to multi-national corporations. Matt has substantial experience that ranges from SEC filings, IPOs, acquisitions, and carve-outs audits, including large multi-firm audit engagements. He is also a Performance Management Leader for the St. Louis audit practice, providing counseling and career guidance for audit professionals, and campus recruiting. His wife, Amanda (Black) Mehner (’03), graduated with a Bachelor of Science in biology from Truman and has a Master of Medical Science (M.M.S) Physician Assistant (PA-C) from Saint Louis University (2006). They reside in the Saint Louis area with their three children.
Jenny Meyer (’92)
Jenny Meyer is a partner at Anders in the Tax Services Group. She works with closely-held businesses and families on individual and corporate tax planning and financial statement preparation. She assists clients in the specialized areas of estate and trust planning. She speaks frequently to client and external groups about navigating tax law changes and provides advice on wealth building. She is a leader in Anders Women’s Initiative, which is dedicated to helping women thrive in their businesses and careers. At Truman, she was a member of Alpha Sigma Alpha and earned an MS in Accounting in 1992.
Pat Miller (’08, ’09)
Pat Miller is a Manager in the St. Louis office of RubinBrown, primarily serving within the Colleges and Universities and Nonprofit industry groups. He has more than 13 years of experience providing assurance and tax services to both public and private entities. Pat earned Bachelor’s degrees in both accounting and finance from Truman in 2008, and followed that up by earning his Master’s in Accountancy from the University in 2009. He was honored as the School of Business Young Alumnus of the Year in 2020. A member of the Accounting Advisory Board since 2018, Pat has also served as the Board Treasurer of the Southside Early Childhood Center in south St. Louis since 2019 and was the recipient of the RubinBrown Community Service Award in 2019. Pat is married to a fellow Truman graduate, Abbey (’08, ’09), and the couple has three children. In his free time, Pat enjoys hiking, watching soccer, and attending St. Louis Blues and Cardinals games.
Salvatore P. Montalbano (’92)
Sal Montalbano has been Senior Vice President of Tax at Constellation Energy since June 2022. In this role, he manages a 23-person tax department and is in charge of federal, state, and international taxes. This includes assisting government affairs with tax policy advocacy, managing federal and state audits and reviewing and approving tax compliance filings for both direct and indirect taxes.
Prior to joining Constellation, Sal was a tax partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers for 13 years and was with PwC 27 years overall. Sal led the power and utilities tax practice at PwC and has extensive experience at public utility tax accounting issues, tax regulatory matters and various power and utility federal tax planning initiatives.
Sal received a B.S. in Accounting from Truman State University and a J.D. from Washington University in St. Louis. He is both a CPA and licensed attorney in Missouri.
Chris Moore (’02)
Chris Moore is a St. Louis Assurance Partner for EY. He has more than 20 years of experience serving a broad range of industries, including public and privately held clients from entrepreneurial/growth companies to Fortune 500 companies. He has significant experience with SEC reporting including public offerings of securities, mergers and acquisitions, complex technical accounting areas, and the related compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley Section 404 (SOX). Through these experiences, he has worked with clients to address a variety of complex issues including revenue recognition, business combinations, variable interest entities, and unique debt and equity structures. In addition to client service, Chris is the Performance Management and Development Leader for the St. Louis assurance practice, and previously led campus recruiting for the office.
Chris also serves on the advisory board of directors for the Network-for-Teaching-Entrepreneurship and the executive board for Make-A-Wish of St. Louis. He lives in Saint Louis, Mo., with his wife, Erin, and two daughters, Finley and Madeline.
Clint Nelson (’93)
Clint Nelson is an audit managing director with Deloitte and Touche LLP and serves as the industrial products and construction deputy industry professional practice director. He has more than 25 years of experience providing audit and assurance service to public and private enterprises. In addition to his client service roles, Clint is involved in the development of tools and strategies used by global Deloitte professionals in the delivery of audit services. He served as a member of Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu Limited’s PCAOB Audit Performance Coaching program; a program designed to support the ongoing improvement of global audit quality. Clint and his wife, Leigh Ann, graduated from Truman in 1993 and reside in the Kansas City area.
Derek Smith (’01, ’03)
Derek Smith, CPA, is a Partner at FORVIS. He began his career at BKD (now FORVIS) in 2008. At Truman, he was involved with Student Senate and the Accounting Club. He earned a BS in Accounting and Business Administration, Management/Finance in 2001 and a Master of Accounting in 2003.
Melissa Smith (’06, ’07)
Melissa Smith graduated from Truman State University in December 2006 and December 2007 with her Bachelor’s and Master’s in Accounting. Melissa has worked in the health care industry for over 10 years, currently serving as a Senior Director of Accounting at Cigna. After Truman, Melissa worked for Deloitte and Touche for over four years. Melissa then joined Express Scripts’ Financial Reporting & Compliance Department and has held positions of increased responsibility over time. Melissa joined Cigna in December 2018 after Express Scripts was acquired by Cigna. She is married and has two children. She enjoys spending time with family and being outdoors.
