Pre-Law Studies
Extracurricular Organizations of Interest for Pre-Law
Law schools want prospective students to possess an outstanding GPA, excellent LSAT scores, but also look to see that students have been actively involved in extracurriculars that demonstrate leadership, problem solving, and critical thinking. We are fortunate at Truman to have some outstanding extracurriculars relating to Pre-Law including the Truman Forensic Team, the Truman Mock Trial Team, and Phi Alpha Delta.
Phi Alpha Delta
Phi Alpha Delta is an international law fraternity that helps undergraduates prepare for law school, network with legal professionals, and engage in community service. You can find the Truman Chapter on Facebook and Instagram.
Mock Trial Team
The Truman State University Mock trial team is a student-led organization that competes against other schools through the American Mock Trial Association (AMTA). Truman’s team is considered one of the top mock trial programs in the region. The team participates in competitive events simulating real trials, where students play the roles of witnesses and attorneys. They prepare both sides of a fictional legal case provided by the AMTA at the beginning of each year. The program is divided into one or more teams, each with 6-10 competitors. During competitions, only 6 members compete at a time—3 attorneys and 3 witnesses. Truman’s Mock Trial team has had success, placing 3rd and 8th at the Drake University tournament (2025) and qualifying for the national tournament (2025). Contact them via Facebook and Twitter or through email at tsumocktrial@gmail.com.
Forensic Team
The Truman State University Forensic Team is a nationally ranked speech and debate team. The team provides students with the opportunity to engage in competitive public speaking and debate activities at both the state and national level. The team has achieved first place finishes at the MAFA State Championship Tournament in both individual events and debate sweepstakes and placed 9th in the National Forensic Association Championship.
