What co-curricular or extracurricular activities were you involved in?
Ronald E. McNair Post-baccalaureate Achievement Program. My participation in this program provided me with assistance in graduating from college, enrolling in graduate school, and completing graduate studies.
What are you doing now?
Home Health/Direct Support; Raising a four-year-old daughter
How did you get to this place in your life/ career?
When I first graduated with my master’s degree in 2016, I worked for two summers as a youth job coach/case manager and temporarily as a program specialist (developmental disabilities) for a group home.
Have you been to graduate school? If so, where did you go? Did you go right after graduating from Truman?
I attended graduate school at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, Ill., from 2013 to 2016. I went to graduate school after my study abroad trip to Accra, Ghana, in the Spring of 2013 through the international student exchange program
Do you have any advice for Truman students who are interested in going to graduate school?
Go for it! Graduate school was one of my best experiences ever! Minimize student loan debt! Network in your career field!
How has the education you’ve received from Truman helped you?
As a Truman student, I had the opportunity to study a broad range of subjects that have provided me with new and different perspectives on the world in which we live. Through my undergraduate and graduate coursework, I now understand some of the issues of inequality and social justice that I observed while growing up and now living in Saint Louis City.
Are there any particular classes you’re glad you took? Did you like them at the time?
Statistics. This was not an easy subject for me to understand, but at least undergraduate exposure to statistics helped out a little in graduate school (BTW my research was qualitative).
What is your favorite memory of your time at Truman?
My favorite memory of my time at Truman was participating in the McNair Program and traveling on a plane for the first time to the University of Alabama for a graduate school visit.
Why is Truman a good school at which to study?
Truman is a good school because of its dedication to student’s success. After all, Truman is nationally ranked no. 1 Public University in the Midwest for 23 years running.
Do you have any advice for someone wanting to go into the same line of work as you?
Take control of your own destiny. Start your own business!
What do you miss most about campus life and living in Kirksville?
Living in Kirksville was very peaceful!
If you could teach current students one thing, what would it be?
Live life and enjoy it. That’s the key to success! Positivity, confidence, and persistence are key in life so never give up on yourself!
