The Univer-sity surpassed its $43,000 goal; more than $47,000 has been pledged to date.
Root for the Bulldogs as they attempt to make school history again by becoming the first men's soccer team to advance to the semi-finals of the NCAA Division II Soccer Championships! The 1997 squad is already the best team in school history, charting the first postseason victory in Truman men's soccer history over SIU-Edwardsville last Saturday, 2-1. Adrian Marrero scored the game-winning goal in the 83rd minute, while Jimmy Duran tied the score before the half on an assist from Marrero. The men shared the MIAA conference title with a 3-1 mark and are so far 15-5 for the season.The Bulldog Women's Soccer Team will also be making a quarterfinals appearance in the NCAA Division II championships at West Virginia Wesleyan this weekend. The women became the first Truman soccer team to earn a postseason victory when they defeated St. Joseph's (Ind.), 1-0, last Saturday. It also marked the team's first berth in the DII playoffs in its 14-year history. Stephanie Toczylowski scored the game-winner for the Bulldogs on an assist from her sister, Carie, in the 85th minute. The women now have a 15-5-1 record.
The Bulldogs will play host to East Stroudsburg (Pa.) Saturday, Nov. 22 at the Truman Soccer Complex. Tickets are $4 for general admission, $2 for Truman students with ID, and $1 for children under 12.
Truman's first recipients of the Jim Sears Leadership Scholarship were recently honored on campus. Gov. Mel Carnahan signed legislation in June 1997 that established the scholarship at Sears' alma mater.The Sears Scholarship is awarded to entering Truman freshmen from throughout Missouri's congressional districts who have shown a strong record of leadership or community service. The scholarship honors the late Jim Sears, representative from the first legislative district from 1994 to 1996. Sears, who received his bachelor's degree from Truman in 1982, was killed in a car accident on Nov. 27, 1996.
Molly LaBarge, freshman piano major, was the featured soloist in a performance of the Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 1 (first movement), which was presented Nov. 9 in Belleville, Ill. She was joined by the Belleville Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Dr. Leon Burke III. LaBarge was chosen for this honor by competitive audition held last spring. She presently studies with David McKamie, associate professor of music.Lonny Morrow, professor of education, was re-elected chairperson of the Institutions of Higher Eduction/ Center for Innovations in Special Education of the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education Coalition (IHE/CISE/DESE Coalition).
Johanna Shafer, assistant college professor of Ryle South Residential College, Stephanie Wintermann, senior German major, and Reuben Peterson, associate professor of German, gave presentations on Austria, German schools and Berlin respectively at the Putnam County Middle School "German Emphasis Day" in Unionville, Oct. 31.
Truman's Dean of Graduate Studies has nominated Peggy Sahaida's thesis, "Forging New Paths: Willa Cather's Female Pioneering Artist" for the Midwestern Association of Graduate Schools (MAGS) Annual Distinguished Master's Thesis Award. Sahaida received her Master of Arts degree in English from Truman in May 1997; her thesis committee chair was Priscilla Riggle, assistant professor of English.
Michael Tannenbaum, associate professor of biology, and Yinfa Ma, associate professor of chemistry, have received invitations to participate on review panels of the National Science Foundation. They will travel to Washington in January to review ILI proposals.
The Truman Equestrian Team traveled to Murray State University, Oct. 24-26 to compete in a Hunt and Stock Seat Intercollegi-ate Horse Show. The team took 24 members and brought back 62 ribbons. The team competed against Murray State, Western Kentucky, Middle Tennessee State, Southeast Missouri State, Rhodes College and Southern Illinois.
CDS International, Inc., is accepting applications for the 1998-99 Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange for Young Professionals to study and work in Germany for one year. Through this government-sponsored exchange program, 60 Americans participate in two months of intensive German language training, four months of study at a German technical/ professional school or university, and a six-month internship with a German organization or business. Participants live with host families. Program duration is late-July 1998 to mid-July 1999.Applicants must be U.S. citizens between the ages of 18-24 at the start of the program. German language ability is not required but is strongly recommended. Deadline for completed applications is Dec. 15.

Proposals for Summer 1998 Undergrad-uate Research Stipends are now being accepted. Up to 15 stipends of $1,500 each will be awarded. Interested students need to work with a faculty mentor in developing a brief research proposal.This program is designed to encourage a dedicated period of collaborative research for full-time students of outstanding scholastic ability in collaboration with a faculty mentor.
The applicant must be a full-time, undergraduate student who has completed 30 semester hours at Truman at the time of application with a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher. The student and faculty mentor will develop a research proposal.
Each $1,500 stipend will support the student during the 10-week period, May 26-July 31, 1998; each recipient is expected to conduct a minimum of 300 hours of research. Successful applicants will be announced in February.
Students receiving stipends must present the results of their research at the Truman State University Undergraduate Research Symposium in spring 1999.
The research proposal must be submitted to the Division Head of the faculty mentor by Jan. 16. Further information is available in division offices.

The State Farm Companies Foundation will be offering Fellowships to recognize students in business-related fields. The awards are not influenced by the student's financial needs. To be eligible for the Fellowship students must be full time juniors or seniors at the time of application, be majoring in a business-related field, and have a 3.6 or higher grade point average on a 4.0 scale. A complete application, nomination, transcripts, and letters of recommendation must be received by the Foundation by Feb. 15, 1998.The National Society of Public Account-ants Scholarship Foundation is now accepting applications for financial assistance for the 1998-1999 academic year. The Digital Type Review (DTR), an online publication of Thomas Jefferson University Press (TJUP) at Truman State University, was recently featured on Netscape's "What's New" page and Yahoo's "Daily Picks." Both Netscape and Yahoo reach out to millions of people browsing the World Wide Web to guide them to the newest and best web sites. The listing of DTR brought more than 7,200 new visitors to the DTR web site, totalling more than 90,000 "hits" in just three days. All of these visitors discovered on the DTR home page that it's produced right here at Truman.The Digital Type Review is dedicated to the task of educating and informing designers and non-designers alike about type, related technology, and the industry. Toward this end, DTR consists of a continually updated page of news items; reviews of fonts, books, and software; feature articles and interviews; and links to related web sites.
Thomas Jefferson University Press was established in 1986, shortly after the Missouri State Legislature designated its host institution, Truman State University, as the statewide liberal arts and sciences university. The press has published more than 70 trade and scholarly titles in the humanities and social sciences, including important series and serials like Sixteenth Century Essays and Studies, the Peter Martyr Library, Mediterranean Studies and the Bethsaida Excavations Project.
