If you are interested in applying the cognitive effects of language structure to real-world problems, you can add Truman’s applied linguistics minor for implementation in realms of education, business, medicine, and more. Students pursuing this minor are prepared for professional areas of language policy and planning, second language acquisition, literacy, language assessment, forensic linguistics, and translation.

Students receive broad instruction from both professors and acclaimed linguists through the Ofstad Visiting Scholar Program, featuring accent in foreign language, language endangerment and revitalization, and strategic metaphor. You can additionally get hands-on practical experience locally by teaching English to speakers of other languages, as well as complete international for-credit ESL internships.
