Journalism Foundation Scholarships

Dvorak Journalism Scholarship

  • The Society of Professional Journalists/Sigma Delta Chi established this scholarship to honor former mass communications instructor Jack Dvorak.

Paul Talley & Matt Johnson Memorial Award

  • This scholarship was established in 2004 as a tribute to the contributions of Paul Talley and Matt Johnson to the field of photography. Talley, 44, and Johnson, 25, were among 13 people killed aboard a commuter plane crash on October 19, 2004 near Kirksville. They were part of the Hawkeye Creative Communication team assisting Truman with the creation and design of new University publications and they were scheduled to take photographs on campus. Talley and his wife and daughter were residents of Mesquite, TX. Johnson was a 1997 graduate of Longview High School in Texas.

Norb Tatro Missouri & Out-of-State Annual Scholarships

  • These scholarships were established by Norb Tatro in 2008. Tatro is a retired Chicago-based writer, originally from Mason City, IA, who worked for more than 40 yerars—half of that time at NBC—as a broadcast journalist and journalism educator. He earned his MSJ from the Medill School of Journalism, Northwestern University. For five semesters, he commuted to Kirksville from Chicago to teach in a tenure-track position in journalism at Truman. Tatro maintains an online blog, Norblog. A former marathoner, he still enjoys jogging/walking along Chicago’s lakefront. He and his wife, Elaine Feldman, live in the city’s Lake View neighborhood.
