The plan listed below is designed to provide suggestions for sequencing your major courses, but there are also other ways to sequence most majors. This plan is meant to provide aid in early, provisional planning. Please consult with your academic advisor to make strategic academic decisions about which courses to take each semester.

Sample Two Year Plan: English (BA)

The following plan is possible on the presumption that an incoming student has an Associate of Arts (AA) degree prior to enrolling at Truman State University.

FALL - Semester 1

- ENG 216: New Majors Seminar (1 cr)
- ENG 209: WE/Dialogues w/ Literature (3 cr) OR ENG 211: WE/Perspectives on Literature and Film (3 cr) OR ENG 280: Film Form and Sense (3 cr)
- JINS 3XX: WE/Junior Interdisciplinary Seminar (or Spring Semester 2)

SPRING - Semester 2

- ENG 300-400 “Genres, Forms, & Audiences” course (4 cr)
- ENG 300-400 “Diverse Perspectives” course (4 cr)
- ENG/CWRT/LING 200-300 elective (3-4 cr)
- JINS 3XX: WE/Junior Interdisciplinary Seminar (if not taken in Fall Semester 1)

FALL - Semester 3

- 300-400 “Geographical and Historical Contexts” course (4 cr)
- ENG 451: Internship for English AND ENG 452: Internship Evaluation (4 cr), OR ENG 300-400 elective (4 cr)

SPRING - Semester 4

- ENG 498: WE/Senior English Capstone (4 cr)
- ENG/CWRT/LING 300-400 elective (4 cr)
- ENG/CWRT/LING 300-400 elective (4 cr)

NOTES:

  • WE = Writing Enhanced course
  • The ENG (BA) is extremely flexible; the plan above is intended to illustrate a typical distribution of courses from various areas of the program
  • Only grades of “C” and above are accepted toward the English degree.
  • Up to 8 combined credits of practical application courses may count toward the BA English major. These courses included ENG 327 and CRWT/ENG/LING 451 & 452.
  • Coursework for the English major is divided into the following:
    • Part I: Common Experiences - three courses, 8 credit hours;
    • Part II: Guided Exploration - three courses, one from each of three areas, 9-12 credit hours;
    • Part III: Electives - additional 14-17 hours of approved coursework to total a minimum of 34 credits, a minimum of 20 credits must be at the 300-level or above.
  • Ofstad Visiting Scholar courses may count toward the degree program — details will be included in open course lists
