Dr. Eric Freedman is Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost at Truman State University. Freedman joined Truman in 2023, and holds a faculty appointment in Communication. Freedman came to Truman from Columbia College Chicago, where he served as Dean of the School of Media Arts, following his tenure as Dean of the James L. Knight School of Communication at Queens University of Charlotte where he led a number of civically focused initiatives.

Freedman holds a Ph.D. from the School of Cinematic Arts at the University of Southern California. He is the author of Artificial Intelligence and Playable Media (Routledge, 2023), The Persistence of Code in Game Engine Culture (Routledge, 2020) and Transient Images: Personal Media in Public Frameworks (Temple University Press, 2011). His most recent essays include "Nonbinary Binaries and Unreal MetaHumans" (Race/Gender/Class/Media) and "Engineering Queerness in the Game Development Pipeline" (Game Studies). He serves on the editorial boards of the International Journal of Creative Media Research and the Journal of Communication and Media Studies, and is Chair of the Communication and Media Studies Research Network. Freedman is also an accomplished media artist and has been an active public access producer engaged with community media practices; his creative work has been exhibited at notable venues in the United States and abroad, including the Museum of Contemporary Art in Miami, the American Film Institute, MIX New York, and Ars Electronica.
