Caleb Owen is a social historian of 20th century Africa. He holds a doctorate in African history from Michigan State University. His current book project, Recreated Cities: Leisure, Space, and Citizenship in Kenya, 1895-2002, examines the politics over urban lands and recreational space in Kenya’s two largest cities, Nairobi and Mombasa.  His teaching interests include history of Africa, world history, gender history, the Indian Ocean World, and environmental and urban history.
