Physics Colloquium: Diving into Deep Learning

In the last two decades, deep learning has been instrumental in making significant progress in Artificial Intelligence. Deep learning has also been used to look for hidden patterns in large datasets in multiple fields such as Finance, Biology, Medicine, Physics and Astronomy. The rapid progress in Deep learning has been possible due to the collection of large datasets, automatic feature extraction by deep neural networks, inventions of fast algorithms, and advancement in hardware. In this talk I will go through the nuts and bolts of deep learning design, coding, and interpretation of an image classification problem handled very successfully by deep learning. We will also look at some of the limitations and future prospects of deep learning.
