Join alumni, students, and friends of Truman State University at a special day that’s also a salute to one of the University’s most famous former students: John J. Pershing. The Laclede, Missouri, native briefly pursued his college education in Kirksville before entering West Point and going on to become one of America’s most important military leaders of the 20th century.
Attendees will meet at the historic Battery Maritime Building in lower Manhattan and take a short ferry ride to Governors Island. The group will be following in Pershing’s footsteps 100 years after he made the same trip at the start of his journey from New York to France, where as General of the Armies he led the American Expeditionary Forces in World War I. On Governors Island, attendees will visit Pershing Hall, the former headquarters of the First Army, and the Pershing Oak, a tree memorial planted in his honor.
The walking tour will be led by Kevin C. Fitzpatrick (’89), author of World War I New York: A Guide to the City’s Enduring Ties to the Great War. After the tour, attendees will gather at the new Governor’s Island oyster bar overlooking New York Harbor, with views of Manhattan, Brooklyn, and the Statue of Liberty, for refreshments.
The roundtrip cost of the ferry is $2, so please bring cash for that. There is no charge for the walking tour, but Kevin will have signed copies of his book available for purchase. Meeting time is between 10:30-10:45 a.m. and the ferry departs promptly at 11:00 a.m.
