Directors’ Showcase of One-Act Plays

Truman State University’s Theatre Department will present the work of 3 new directors coming out of the Play Direction class in the Severns Theatre on Truman’s campus. On this night, each directing student will present a different one act play from some of the best playwrights from around the country:

A Tale of Two Spectators
By Peter Manos
Directed By: Meredith Grimm-Howell
“Two people meet every week on a park bench to spy on their spouses, who are having an affair with each other.”

St. Valentine’s Day Massacre
By Allan Knee
Directed by: Jamie Bridges
“A former couple meets every year on Valentine’s Day to confer on whether or not to get back together.”

Your Mother’s Butt
By Alan Ball
Directed by Faith Nagel
“A desperate psychologist searches for new methods to help their client unpack a deeply disturbing dream.”

This festival is a result of Truman’s Play Direction course, taught by Assistant Professor David Charles Goyette. The Play Direction course is required of all Theatre Majors in order to graduate. As the final assignment each student is required to direct a one-act play. The plays had to be published within the last 80 years, between 10 and 30 minutes in length and without heavy scenic, costume, light or sound effects. These final productions represent a synthesis of numerous concepts explored in the course of the semester. Students explored composition and picturization techniques, scene analysis, how to develop a directorial approach, methods on how to work with actors, etc.

Meredith Grimm-Howell
Meredith is a senior Theatre and English major with a minor in German. She has been involved in the Truman theater department for 3 years, and has mostly worked as a Stage Manager. She has stage managed Dry Land, After the Blast and Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike earlier this semester. She has also acted in a few one acts and most recently in Truman’s production of Much Ado About Nothing. She hopes to combine her passions for Theatre and German by attending graduate school in Germany after college and working in theatre in the EU.

Jamie Bridges
Jamie Bridges is a senior theatre major. They have served as Assistant Director for two productions: Ghosts in the Machine and Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike. Jamie was also Hair & Makeup Designer for Love and Information, Dry Land, Pride@Prejudice, After the Blast, and Much Ado About Nothing. Onstage, Jamie has acted in three one-acts. After college, Jamie plans to move to Chicago to pursue a career as a makeup artist.

Faith Nagel
Faith is a theatre major with business administration and film studies minors from Kansas City, Missouri. She has been seen on the Truman stage as Esther in Dry Land, Antigone in Antigone, and Emmy in A Doll’s House, Part Two. When Faith is not onstage, she can be seen working on various shows as a production manager.
