Alaskan Native Myths in the Planetarium

For thousands of years, Alaska Native elders have sat around campfires telling myths that instruct how the world came to be, how to act as social beings, and describing the harsh world where Raven rules supreme. Dr. John Smelcer, a member of the Ahtna Tribe of Alaska, has spent his life documenting and preserving the myths of Alaska Natives and publishing numerous books, including Trickster and The Raven and the Totem, which includes a foreword by famed mythologist Joseph Campbell. In this anticipated event, Dr. Smelcer will recite select myths the way he heard them–around a campfire beneath stars and the northern lights.
