National paper-based exams such as the ACT, The Praxis Series, MCAT, LSAT, GRE Subject Exams, Actuarial Exams, and the GED and computer based exams such as the GRE, GMAT, TOEFL and Praxis I are also administered. The office organizes a Weekly Lunch Series where colleagues across the disciplines discuss teaching strategies, report on research or travel, and propose new initiatives. The Center for Teaching and Learning also sponsors numerous workshops, seminars, forums, reading circles, etc. each semester to assist faculty members in enhancing their pedagogies and classroom instruction and with research. Additionally, each summer the office offers Truman faculty opportunities to participate in special teaching institutes, highly recommended for their practicality, grounding in current theory, and, especially, for their eclectic mix of participants from different schools, disciplines, and regions. Annual projects include Founder’s Day activities through the Baldwin Lecture and Dinner and four year-long intensive fellowships sponsored by the Center. Faculty and instructional staff apply through the faculty development committee for these fellowships:
1) The Diversity Institute allows instructors to design a project intended to enhance intercultural competence in our community.
2) The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) Fellowship allows instructors to design a project intended to answer a research query concerning their own teaching and student learning.
3) The Civic Engagement Fellowship revises existing experiences for Truman students so that students’ civic engagement is enhanced.
4) e-Fellowships are designed to give selected faculty and instructional staff the opportunity to implement significant instructional technology.
The Center for Teaching and Learning also encompasses the Grants office, the Teaching and Learning Technology Center, and Instructional Design Services.
The Grants office is one-stop shopping for all aspects of grant writing, preparation and submission for the Truman community. The Grants office is also the University’s clearing house for all submissions. Be certain to contact the Grants office before submitting any proposal. The Grants office also coordinates the Institutional Review Board. The IRB is a campus-wide committee that is charged with the responsibility of ensuring that the rights and welfare of human subjects are protected in research projects.
The Teaching and Learning Technology Center offers the use of and instruction in emerging technology in a multimedia lab (PML 203). Consultations and workshops are also offered on using the course management system, Blackboard, to help faculty and instructional staff get going on the ways this tool can help in teaching.

The program offers introduction to officership and development of leadership, which translates to improved marketability in the civilian job force. Summer internships are available. Helping entering students adjust to a liberal arts university in ways which support their personal and academic success is the goal of the Freshman Program at Truman. A distinctive Truman Week includes class meetings with a faculty member and fellow students who will continue as a learning community throughout the fall semester (the Extended Freshman Course). A variety of activities introduce students to campus offices and resources, their residential college, members of the faculty, and the wider Truman and Kirksville community. Several office and divisions within the University participate in Truman Week. Overall coordination is provided by the Dean of the Residential Colleges and a Director of Truman Week. University Farm Upward Bound Kirk Building 220 (660) 785-4244 Website: http://ub.truman.edu/ The purpose of the Upward Bound program is to assist qualifying high school students in building the skills and motivation necessary for postsecondary success. During the academic year, program staff travel to schools to provide services in after-school meetings; and during the summer, students live on the Truman campus for a six-week college simulation. Responsible for the coordination of the major building and renovation projects from the initial planning through construction completion. The office assists the Administration in determining which projects are most essential to the mission of the University. Once a project has been approved and budgeted, Campus Planning consults with the designated contact to determine the program requirements, needs and goals of the project. The architects and engineers are then solicited by the office to design the project based on the program. After approval of the design by the committee and administration, the Campus Planning Office monitors the architects' and engineers' work preparing the construction documents and supervising the bidding procedures. During construction, the office is responsible for insuring the University's interest in the project and coordinating the contractors' interaction with the campus environment. The Fitness/Wellness Program offers wellness workshops, personal training, and a myriad of non-credit classes from step aerobics to martial arts and ballet. Intramural Recreational Sports sponsors healthy competition in individual and team sport activities. The Student Recreation Center, a $7M facility that opened in Fall 1997, contains many areas for self-directed activity: three court hardwood floor gym, jogging track, aerobics/dance studio, auxiliary court with multipurpose floor, and weight room and fitness areas filled with state-of-the-art cardiovascular and strength training machines and free weights. Supporting the educational mission of the University, the Student Union supports programming which fosters leadership, personal and skill development, citizenship, and social responsibility. As the community center for the campus, the Union seeks to serve as a unifying force in the life of the University. in the areas of early modern studies, regional studies, and poetry. Best
known among scholars for its publications in early modern studies, TSUP
publishes the Sixteenth Century Essays & Studies series. TSUP sponsors
the annual T. S. Eliot Prize for Poetry, which is considered one of the
premier poetry prizes in the country. TSUP has a full-time staff of
three and offers internships and apprenticeships for students in
editing, design, and marketing, and employs students who wish to explore
their interest in publishing.
