OUR COMMITMENT TO THE liberal arts and sciences and to the use of the information we have gathered through our assessment program has led us to view your education as a partnership. We invite prospective students like you to join our campus community, not only because you have demonstrated outstanding academic ability, but also because you have developed special interests and abilities outside the structured educational setting. You have already recognized that learning involves much more than listening to lectures and taking tests.

At Truman, we set aside traditional lecture-style teaching whenever possible, in favor of more creative and interactive approaches. This might mean that instead of merely learning about the great masters in an art appreciation class, you might pick up a brush and learn the difference between watercolor and oil; between impressionism and realism. Whatever the case, you are encouraged to take a more active role in your education at all levels.

The University offers more than 60 undergraduate areas of study. In order to ensure breadth of knowledge, each undergraduate area of study requires at least 63 hours of credit in the liberal arts and sciences. Most of the remaining hours required for your degree are taken within your major area of study.

Although most students find sufficient academic challenge in our classrooms, Truman also offers a general honors program in the liberal arts and sciences curriculum and departmental honors in the major areas of study — even greater challenges for academically qualified students.

Historically, our focus has been on undergraduate education, but we also offer eight master's degree programs in areas of study that are natural extensions of our undergraduate liberal arts and sciences programs. A ninth program in teacher education continues our long tradition of providing cutting-edge preparation for those entering that profession.
