Pre-Veterinary Studies: Application Process

Application Process for Veterinary School

The Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges (AAVMC) provides a Veterinary Medical School Application Service (VMCAS).

If you are applying to an out-of-state school, you will need to fill out to different applications, one is an online application through the AAVMC and the other is a supplemental application that is school specific. Depending on the school you are applying to, you may or may not need to fill out a supplemental application.

Letters of recommendation are an important part of the application process so early in your college career (freshman year), it is important to start thinking about which veterinarians, faculty mentors, and professors can write letters of recommendation for you.

It is also important to read applications carefully as each of them require different essays and explanations. Make sure to take time and include everything you have done, no matter how small—you never know what will give you that extra edge for getting accepted into veterinary school.

Spend time looking at the AAVMA website, as it will be your guide while applying. It also contains statistics about the past several years vet students, information on each school, different job opportunities, and more.
