Navigating the Elementary Admissions Process

Applying to the MAE Program for Elementary Education

  • Complete applications are due February 1, March 1, April 1, September 1, and October 1
  • The application for the Graduate Office requires a fee, your professional statement that includes your desire to work with elementary students, and other components. Be sure to give yourself enough time to proofread your work and complete the application well. The elementary faculty does not receive your application for consideration from the Graduate Office until it is complete.
  • Core Requirements:
    • GRE Scores
      • There is no set score on the GRE for admission to the elementary program. The score is considered in conjunction with your other application materials.
      • We are finding that testing sites have limited seats that are available for GRE testing. You should schedule your testing date at least two months ahead.
      • It takes approximately 10-15 days to receive official computer-delivered test scores.
      • It takes about 6 weeks to receive paper-delivered test scores.
    • 3 Letters of Recommendation
      • Individuals writing letters of recommendation do not receive information regarding what to include in the content of the letters. It can be helpful if you remind them that they should discuss your professional dispositions, work with children, and ability to be successful in an education graduate program. Your resume would be helpful to them when writing the letter.
      • Ask individuals who know you in a professional context to write letters of recommendation well in advance of the deadline. You need to let the person writing your letter know when the due date is for the recommendation letter. The recommendation letters are submitted via a link the recommender receives from the Graduate Office.
      • All (3) letters need to be received by the Graduate Office no later than the 1st of the month in which you are applying. Your application is not complete without all 3 letters. Again, the elementary faculty does not receive your application until it is complete. It is your responsibility to check that your letters have been submitted and to follow up with anyone who has not submitted their letter.
      • At least one letter must demonstrate your ability to work in a classroom setting.
