Named after U.S. Army General and Truman alumnus John J. Pershing, this scholarship was established in 1972 under the direction of former University President Charles McClain, who felt that the academic, full scholarship would open doors for students who might otherwise not have the opportunity to choose Truman. The first class of Pershing Scholars enrolled at Truman in 1973.

Pershing Scholars typically rank in the top three percent of their high school graduating class, exhibit strong leadership skills and community involvement, and are among the top scorers on standardized tests for high school achievement and college admissions.
