Dr. Richter teaches a wide variety of courses in German and in Linguistics. In German, these include Translation and Grimms' Ma"rchen and German Dialectology. Offerings in the linguistics program regularly include Linguistics of the Romance Languages and Structure and History of English. Recent courses have included Linguistics of Swahili and Linguistics of Icelandic. He maintains an interest in translation theory and has published several translations, e.g. Pierrot Lunaire (Albert Giraud); The Gate of All Marvelous Things: A Guide to Reading the Tao Te Ching; Beyond the Pleasure Principle (Sigmund Freud); The Future of an Illusion (Sigmund Freud); Civilization and its Discontents (Sigmund Freud); and The Letters of Sigmund Freud and Otto Rank.
