Major Gary Goodman was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the Field Artillery upon graduation from Bloomsburg University in 2004 with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. 

His first assignment was at the Field Artillery Officer’s Basic Course at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. He was then assigned to Fort Campbell, Kentucky as a Troop Fire Support Officer for Charlie Troop, 1st Squadron, 33rd Cavalry Regiment in 3rd Brigade, 101st Airborne Division. In 2005, Major Goodman deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Upon returning from Iraq in September 2006, he transferred to Bravo Battery, 3rd Battalion, 320th Field Artillery Regiment where he served as a Platoon Leader. Upon deploying to Iraq in September 2007, Major Goodman was transferred to 1st Squadron, 33rd Cavalry Regiment where he served as the Squadron Fire Support Officer.

Major Goodman’s next assignment was at the Field Artillery Captain’s Career Course at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. Upon graduation, he was assigned to 1st Stryker Brigade, 25th Infantry Division at Fort Wainwright, Alaska where he served as the Assistant Brigade Fire Support Officer during Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan, prior to assuming command of Alpha Battery, 2nd Battalion, 8th Field Artillery from December 2011 to February 2013. He was then selected to assume command of Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 5th Squadron, 1st Cavalry Regiment from March 2013 to March 2014.

Major Goodman’s next assignment was as an operations officer at the Combined Arms Center, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. He then remained at Fort Leavenworth to attend the Command and General Staff Officer’s Course, during which time he earned a Master’s in Business Administration from Webster’s University.

Most recently, Major Goodman assumed the position of Assistant Professor of Military Science at Truman State University.

 His awards include the Bronze Star Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Kosovo Campaign Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal with three Service Stars, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with two Service Stars, the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Overseas Service Ribbon with Numeral 3, the NATO Medal for both Kosovo and Afghanistan, and the Armed Forces Reserve Medal with “M” device. He has also earned the Air Assault Badge and Combat Action Badge.  Major Goodman was inducted into the Honorable Order of Saint Barbara and Order of Saint George.

Major Goodman is married to the former Jennifer Botham of Mahanoy Plane, PA. Gary has two children; a son Ryan, age eight, and daughter Emily, age two.
